Problem Description

Your Kangaroo motion sensor refuses to arm when you try to activate your security system. The app may show the sensor as inactive or the system arms without including the motion sensor. This leaves a gap in your security coverage.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Motion sensors typically excluded from Home mode to allow movement inside.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the system mode

Kangaroo motion sensors typically only arm when the system is in Away mode. In Home mode, motion sensors are disabled so you can walk around your house without triggering the alarm. Check the Kangaroo app — if the system shows 'Home' mode, motion sensors are deliberately inactive. Switch to Away mode to activate motion sensors. The transition happens immediately after the exit delay expires.

2

Verify the sensor is online

In the Kangaroo app, go to Devices and check the motion sensor status. If it shows 'Offline' or has a warning icon: the sensor has lost connection to the hub. Move the sensor closer to the hub (Bluetooth range is approximately 30-40 feet indoors). Check the battery — open the back cover of the sensor by pressing the tab at the bottom and replace the CR2032 coin cell if low. If the sensor went offline after a battery change, re-pair it in the app.

3

Check the sensor is assigned to the correct mode

In the Kangaroo app, check the sensor settings. The sensor should be assigned to trigger in 'Away' mode (and optionally 'Home' mode if you want motion detection while home). If the sensor is not assigned to any mode, it will not arm regardless of system state. Enable the correct mode assignment for the sensor.

4

Re-pair the motion sensor

If the sensor will not arm despite correct mode settings and online status: remove it from the app (Devices > sensor > Remove Device). Then re-add it: + > Add Device > Motion Sensor. Pair via Bluetooth. Reassign it to Away mode. Test by arming in Away mode and walking past the sensor — it should trigger within 3-5 seconds.

5

Restart the hub

If multiple sensors are not arming: the hub may have a software glitch. Unplug the Kangaroo siren/hub from the outlet for 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait 2 minutes for it to boot. After restarting, arm the system in Away mode and test each motion sensor. If all sensors arm correctly, the hub needed a restart to clear a stuck state. If specific sensors still fail, those individual sensors need troubleshooting.

Quick Solutions

Include sensor in mode
Run walk test
Replace battery
Check delay settings

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.

Pro Tip

Pair motion sensors with smart lights to create automatic lighting that turns on when you enter a room and off after a few minutes of no motion. This is one of the simplest and most useful smart home automations you can set up.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
