Problem Description

Your Kangaroo siren sounds too quiet to be effective as an alarm deterrent. When triggered, the siren produces a low volume that is barely audible from another room. This undermines the purpose of having an alarm system since intruders may not hear it.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always notify your monitoring provider before performing system tests to prevent dispatching emergency services unnecessarily. Never disable your security system for extended periods. If you smell gas or suspect a real emergency call 911 directly rather than relying on your smart system.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the siren volume setting

The Kangaroo Siren + Keypad has a built-in 105dB siren. In the Kangaroo app, go to the hub/siren settings and check the volume level. If it is set to low or muted, increase it to maximum. Some users lower the volume during setup or testing and forget to restore it. The siren should be at maximum volume for security purposes — a quiet siren does not deter intruders or alert neighbors.

2

Test the siren

In the Kangaroo app, use the test function to trigger the siren briefly. The siren should be loud enough to hear throughout your home and ideally from outside. If the siren sounds weak or distorted: check that the speaker grille is not blocked by furniture, curtains, or wall hangings. The siren is directional — face the speaker side toward the interior of the room, not against the wall.

3

Reposition the hub for better coverage

The Kangaroo hub plugs into an outlet. If it is plugged into an outlet behind a sofa, in a closet, or in a corner, the sound is muffled. Move it to an outlet in an open area, ideally in a central hallway or near the main entry. The siren sound needs clear space to project through the home. Wall outlets at waist height project sound better than floor-level outlets behind furniture.

4

Check the entry and exit chime volume

The keypad chimes (beeps during arming/disarming countdown) are separate from the full alarm siren. If the chimes are too quiet: check the chime volume in the app settings. Some models allow independent volume control for chimes versus the alarm siren. The chimes are intentionally quieter than the full alarm, but they should be audible enough to remind you to disarm when entering.

5

Replace the hub if the siren is defective

If the siren produces no sound or a crackling/distorted sound at maximum volume: the speaker may be damaged. Try a factory reset (press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds). If the siren still does not work after the reset, the hardware is defective. Contact Kangaroo support for a warranty replacement. In the meantime, consider adding a secondary smart siren (like a Zigbee siren) to your setup if your system supports additional devices.

Quick Solutions

Check base station power and internet
Replace batteries in offline sensors
Test arm and disarm in all modes
Verify monitoring subscription and contacts
Adjust entry and exit delay timing
Update base station and sensor firmware

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up geofencing so your system arms automatically when everyone leaves home and disarms when the first person returns. This eliminates the chance of forgetting to arm the system and provides seamless daily security.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
