- WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
- Device firmware or app needs updating
- Device not properly set up during initial pairing
Problem Description
Your Scout alarm sensor is showing a tamper alert in the Scout app. A tamper alert means the sensor's cover has been opened or the sensor has been removed from its mounting surface. The tamper switch inside the sensor triggers this alert. This guide covers understanding the tamper mechanism, clearing the alert, and securing the sensor back in place.
Symptoms
- Device shows as offline in the app
- Device does not respond to commands
- App cannot connect to device
- Features not working as expected
- Device disconnects frequently
- Automations fail to trigger
- Voice commands not recognized

Step-by-Step Solution
Understand the tamper alert
Scout sensors have a tamper switch that triggers when the sensor is removed from its mounting surface or the case is opened. This is a security feature — if an intruder tries to remove or disable a sensor, the hub registers a tamper event and alerts you. The Scout app shows which sensor triggered the tamper alert with a timestamp.
Reseat the sensor on its mount
If a tamper alert fires and the sensor was accidentally knocked loose: press the sensor firmly back onto its mounting surface. The tamper switch (a small button on the back of the sensor) must be fully compressed against the wall or door frame. If the adhesive has weakened, remove the old adhesive, clean the surface, and apply fresh 3M mounting tape. Press firmly for 30 seconds.
Close the sensor case
If the tamper alert fired because the sensor case was opened (for a battery change): make sure the case is fully snapped shut on all sides. The tamper switch inside the case must be pressed by the cover. If one edge of the cover is not clicked in, the switch stays open and the tamper alert persists. Press each edge of the cover until it clicks.
Clear the tamper alert in the app
After fixing the physical tamper (remounting or closing the case): open the Scout app. The tamper alert should clear automatically once the hub detects the tamper switch is closed. If it does not clear within 60 seconds, open and close the app. If the alert persists: restart the Scout hub by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging back in. The hub re-checks all sensors during startup.
Check for a defective tamper switch
If the sensor continuously triggers tamper alerts even when properly mounted and closed: the tamper switch may be stuck or broken. Remove the sensor from the app (Devices > sensor > Remove). Open the case and visually inspect the tamper switch — press it with your finger and check if it springs back. If stuck, try cleaning around it. If the switch is broken, replace the sensor. Scout sensors have a 1-year warranty.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Notification delays almost always return after a major iOS or Android update — background app refresh gets reset to restricted on every major OS version.
Scout sensors are designed to alert if someone tries to remove them during break-in.
Notification delays over 2 minutes are almost never the device's fault — background app restrictions quietly re-enable themselves after every OS update.
