- Dust/grime or a smudge film on the screen
- A screen protector interfering with touch detection
- Digitizer needs recalibration
Problem Description
Your ADT Command panel touchscreen is not responding to taps or is responding incorrectly. The touchscreen may have a film of dust or a screen protector interfering with touch detection. If cleaning doesn't help, the digitizer may need recalibration. This guide covers cleaning, recalibration, and when to contact ADT.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The ADT Command panel is a 7-inch touchscreen, and most 'not responding' complaints are surface-level rather than a failed panel. A capacitive touchscreen reads the electrical contact of your finger, so anything between your finger and the glass - a film of dust and grime, a smudge from repeated touches, or an aftermarket screen protector - degrades or blocks touch detection. Cleaning the screen properly with a soft cloth (and removing any protector) fixes a large share of cases immediately. Cleaning-product residue left on the glass can ironically make it worse, so wipe with a dry or barely-damp cloth rather than spraying.
If a clean screen still misbehaves, the issue is usually temporary state or calibration. A panel mounted in a warm spot can overheat and become sluggish, so letting it cool helps, and a frozen or laggy panel often just needs a reboot to clear a firmware glitch. Some models support recalibrating the digitizer, which corrects taps that register in the wrong place. When the touchscreen stays unresponsive after cleaning, cooling, a reboot, and (if available) recalibration, it points to a hardware/digitizer fault - and because the Command panel is the security system's controller, that's the point to request an ADT technician rather than continue troubleshooting a safety-critical device yourself.
Symptoms
- Touchscreen doesn't respond to taps
- Screen responds in the wrong place (offset touch)
- Taps register intermittently
- Panel frozen on a screen
- Screen sluggish or laggy
- Response worse after cleaning-product residue
- Screen protector/film interfering with touch
- Panel unresponsive but powered on
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Dust/grime or a smudge film on the screen
- A screen protector interfering with touch detection
- Digitizer needs recalibration
- Panel overheating (mounted in a warm spot)
- Firmware glitch requiring a reboot
- Cleaning-product residue on the glass
- Panel frozen and needing a restart
- Hardware/digitizer fault (needs service)
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Regular cleaning prevents buildup that interferes with capacitive touch.
Step-by-Step Solution
Clean the touchscreen surface
The ADT Command panel has a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen. Fingerprints, dust, and grease reduce touch sensitivity. Clean the screen with a soft microfiber cloth — do not use household cleaners, Windex, or paper towels, which can scratch the surface or leave residue. A clean screen improves responsiveness. If the screen has a screen protector, remove it if it is peeling or bubbled — a misaligned protector causes dead zones.
Restart the panel
If the touchscreen is frozen, unresponsive, or showing a blank screen: restart the panel. Press and hold the power button on the side of the panel for 10 seconds until the screen goes black. Wait 15 seconds and press the power button again to boot. The panel takes 2-3 minutes to fully restart. After reboot, the touchscreen should respond normally. A frozen screen is usually caused by a software glitch during a firmware update or heavy sensor traffic.
Check for firmware updates
Outdated firmware can cause touchscreen lag and unresponsiveness. The ADT Command panel receives firmware updates over its cellular or WiFi connection. In the panel menu, go to Settings > About > check for updates. If an update is available, install it. The panel may restart during the update — do not power it off during this process. After the update, test touchscreen responsiveness across all screens.
Recalibrate the touchscreen
If taps register in the wrong location (you tap one button but the panel registers a different one): the touchscreen needs recalibration. Some ADT Command panel models have a touchscreen calibration option in Settings > Display > Calibrate Screen. Follow the on-screen prompts to tap calibration points. If your model does not have this option, a factory reset may be needed — contact your ADT dealer or technician before performing a factory reset.
Check the panel battery and power
If the touchscreen dims, flickers, or cuts out: the panel may be running on battery backup with low charge. Check that the panel transformer is plugged into a working outlet and the connection to the panel is secure. The Command panel uses a 14V AC transformer. If running on battery only, the screen dims to conserve power and may become less responsive. Restore AC power and let the battery charge for several hours.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Place your speaker in a central location at ear height for best voice pickup. Avoid corners and bookshelves which muffle the microphones. If you have multiple speakers, set up multi-room audio groups so music plays in sync across rooms.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Dust/grime or a smudge film on the screen

Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
