Problem Description

You enabled LAN control in eWeLink but your SONOFF device is still unreachable over the local network. The app falls back to cloud control or shows the device as unavailable. LAN mode uses mDNS discovery to find devices on your local network — it fails when devices are on different subnets, when your router blocks multicast traffic, or when AP isolation is enabled.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

LAN control lets eWeLink command a SONOFF directly over your local network — useful when the internet is down or to cut cloud latency — but it only works when the phone and device are truly on the same network and the router allows them to talk to each other. So "unreachable on LAN" is usually a network-isolation issue.

Make sure your phone and the SONOFF are on the same WiFi network (not different SSIDs or VLANs, and not a guest network), and disable AP/client isolation on the router so devices can reach each other. Enable multicast/mDNS, which LAN discovery relies on, and confirm your device and firmware support LAN control. Re-enable LAN control in eWeLink. Note that LAN mode covers basic on/off; some advanced features still need the cloud.

Symptoms

  • LAN control enabled but device unreachable
  • Local control doesn't work
  • LAN mode fails
  • Can't control locally without internet
  • Unreachable on LAN
  • LAN control unreliable
  • Only works via cloud
  • LAN toggle fails

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Phone and device on different networks/VLANs
  • LAN control not supported by the device/firmware
  • AP/client isolation blocking local traffic
  • mDNS/multicast blocked by the router
  • Weak connection
  • Firmware not updated for LAN
  • Router blocking device-to-device
  • LAN mode not properly enabled

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not assume cloud success means local endpoint path is configured correctly.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify LAN mode is enabled

LAN control is not on by default. In eWeLink, go to Profile > Settings and enable the LAN Control toggle. This tells eWeLink to discover and control SONOFF devices directly over your local network instead of routing through the cloud. Not all SONOFF devices support LAN control — it works with BASICR3/R4, MINIR3/R4, MINI, TH Elite, POW Elite, 4CHPROR4, DUALR3, and most newer models. Older devices like the BASICR2 do not support LAN mode.

2

Put both devices on the same subnet

LAN control uses mDNS discovery — your phone broadcasts a query on the local network and the SONOFF device responds. Both must be on the same subnet. If your phone is on 192.168.1.x and the SONOFF device is on 192.168.0.x (common with dual-band routers that assign different subnets per band), LAN discovery fails. Check your phone's IP: Settings > WiFi > tap your network > see IP address. Check the SONOFF device IP in eWeLink > device > ··· > Device Info. The first three number groups should match.

3

Check router settings blocking local discovery

Some routers block mDNS (multicast DNS) traffic or have AP isolation enabled, which prevents devices from seeing each other on the same network. Log into your router admin: look for 'AP Isolation,' 'Client Isolation,' or 'Wireless Isolation' — disable it. Also check for 'Multicast' settings — mDNS uses multicast group 224.0.0.251 on port 5353. If your router has a firewall for LAN traffic, make sure mDNS is allowed. Mesh WiFi systems (Eero, Google Wifi) sometimes isolate IoT devices if a separate IoT network is configured.

4

Test LAN control by disabling internet temporarily

To confirm LAN control is working: turn off your router's internet connection (unplug the WAN cable) but keep the WiFi running. Open eWeLink and try to control the SONOFF device. If the device responds: LAN control is working. If the app says 'Device offline': LAN mode is not active for that device. Check that the device firmware supports LAN — update firmware over the internet first, then retest LAN mode with internet disconnected.

5

Use the SONOFF DIY mode for direct HTTP control

Some SONOFF devices (BASICR3/R4, MINIR3/R4, D1 Dimmer) support DIY mode — direct HTTP API control without eWeLink. Long-press the device button for 5 seconds to enter pairing, then triple-tap to enter DIY mode. The device creates its own WiFi AP (ITEAD-XXXXXXXXXX). Connect to it and send HTTP requests to port 8081 for direct relay control. This is useful if eWeLink LAN mode is unreliable. The DIY API supports on/off, pulse width, and signal strength queries. It also enables flashing custom firmware like Tasmota.

Quick Solutions

Put the phone and device on the same network/VLAN
Confirm the device supports LAN control
Disable AP/client isolation on the router
Enable multicast/mDNS on the router
Ensure a stable connection
Update firmware
Allow device-to-device traffic
Re-enable LAN control in eWeLink

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Local control improves resilience when cloud access is degraded.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Phone and device on different networks/VLANs
  • LAN control not supported by the device/firmware
  • AP/client isolation blocking local traffic
  • mDNS/multicast blocked by the router
  • Weak connection
