Problem Description

Your Ecobee runs expensive auxiliary or emergency heat instead of your efficient heat pump. The aux heat indicator shows constantly even when outdoor temperature is mild. Your electric bill has skyrocketed because aux heat uses 3-5 times more electricity than the heat pump. Ecobee should only use aux heat when the heat pump cannot keep up.

Symptoms

  • Aux heat indicator shows constantly on thermostat
  • Electric bill doubled or tripled since installing Ecobee
  • Aux heat runs even when outdoor temp is above 40F
  • Heat pump never runs and aux heat handles all heating
  • Ecobee calls for aux heat within minutes of heating cycle
  • Home heats fast but costs are extremely high

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Compressor minimum outdoor temperature set too high
  • Aux heat lockout temperature configured incorrectly
  • Heat pump not wired correctly to Ecobee
  • Threshold for aux heat too short allowing premature activation
  • Compressor disabled in thermostat settings
  • Defrost cycle settings triggering aux heat unnecessarily

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Disabling aux heat completely may result in frozen pipes if heat pump cannot keep up in extreme cold. Use lockout settings not complete disable.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Compressor Minimum Outdoor Temperature

In Ecobee app go to Settings then Installation Settings then Thresholds. Find Compressor Minimum Outdoor Temperature. This should match your heat pump specifications usually 20-35F depending on model. If set to 65F your heat pump never runs in normal heating weather. Set it to your heat pump rated minimum.

2

Configure Aux Heat Max Outdoor Temperature

In the same Thresholds menu find Aux Heat Max Outdoor Temperature. Set this to a few degrees above your compressor minimum. For example if heat pump works down to 25F set aux max to 30F. This prevents aux heat from running when outdoor temp is warm enough for the heat pump.

3

Verify Heat Pump Wiring

Go to Settings then Installation Settings then Equipment then Wire Detection. Your Y1 terminal should show a wire detected. Y1 controls the heat pump compressor. If Y1 shows no wire your heat pump compressor is not connected and cannot run. Check wiring at both thermostat and air handler.

4

Adjust Threshold Before Aux Heat Engages

Ecobee activates aux heat if the set temperature is not reached within a certain time. Go to Installation Settings then Thresholds then Heat Differential Temperature. Increase this value so the heat pump has more time to reach temperature before aux kicks in. Try 2F instead of default 0.5F.

5

Check Heat Pump Balance Point

Your heat pump has a balance point temperature where it can no longer heat efficiently. Below this point aux heat should help. Above this point heat pump should work alone. If your home rarely reaches setpoint with heat pump only your balance point is set wrong or your heat pump is undersized or failing.

Quick Solutions

Lower compressor minimum outdoor temp setting
Configure aux heat lockout temperature properly
Verify Y1 wire connected for heat pump compressor
Increase threshold time before aux heat activates
Enable compressor in thermostat settings
Adjust aux heat max outdoor temperature

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Heat pumps heat slowly but efficiently. Aux heat heats fast but expensively. Let the heat pump run longer before expecting aux to help.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Compressor minimum outdoor temperature set too high
  • Aux heat lockout temperature configured incorrectly
  • Heat pump not wired correctly to Ecobee
  • Threshold for aux heat too short allowing premature activation
  • Compressor disabled in thermostat settings
