Problem Description

Your Ecobee thermostat screen shows a Calibrating message and your heating or cooling system is not running. Normally the Ecobee calibrates briefly when it first starts a heating or cooling cycle to match the system output to the temperature differential. However if the Calibrating message stays on the screen for more than 5 minutes or reappears every time the system tries to run the thermostat is stuck in a calibration loop. This means the Ecobee detected that the HVAC system started but the expected temperature change did not occur within the expected timeframe causing it to repeatedly restart the calibration process.

Symptoms

  • Ecobee screen shows Calibrating for more than 5 minutes
  • HVAC system starts briefly then stops and Calibrating reappears
  • Home temperature not changing despite thermostat calling for heat or cool
  • Calibrating message appears every time the system tries to run
  • Fan runs but no heated or cooled air comes through vents
  • System was working then suddenly started showing Calibrating constantly

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • HVAC system short cycling and shutting off before producing meaningful temperature change
  • Thermostat wired incorrectly causing Ecobee to misread HVAC signals
  • Air filter severely clogged restricting airflow so temperature does not change at vents
  • HVAC equipment failure where system turns on but does not actually heat or cool
  • Ecobee temperature sensor inaccurate due to heat from wiring or direct sunlight
  • Compressor contactor failing causing AC to start then immediately stop

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

If the Calibrating message is accompanied by a burning smell, unusual sounds from the HVAC system, or the circuit breaker tripping, shut off the HVAC system immediately and call a professional. These indicate a serious equipment failure that should not be resolved through thermostat troubleshooting.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Power Cycle the HVAC System

Go to your electrical panel and turn off the HVAC breaker. If you have separate breakers for the furnace and AC unit turn both off. Wait 60 seconds. Turn them back on. Go to the Ecobee and wait for it to reboot. The thermostat will attempt a fresh calibration cycle. If the HVAC system runs normally and the temperature begins changing the Calibrating message was caused by a temporary lockout that the power cycle resolved.

2

Replace the Air Filter

A severely clogged air filter restricts airflow so much that even when the HVAC system runs the temperature at the thermostat does not change noticeably. The Ecobee interprets this as the HVAC not responding and restarts calibration. Check your filter and replace it if it is dirty. After replacing the filter run the system and verify warm or cool air is flowing from the vents.

3

Verify HVAC Is Actually Producing Heat or Cool

When the Ecobee shows Calibrating go to a vent and feel for air. If air is blowing but it is room temperature instead of warm during heating or cold during cooling the HVAC equipment has a problem. For heating this could be a failed ignitor or gas valve. For cooling this could be low refrigerant or a failed compressor. The Ecobee is correctly identifying that the system is not producing the expected output. Call an HVAC technician.

4

Check Thermostat Wiring

Remove the Ecobee from its wall plate and inspect the wiring. Each wire should be firmly inserted into its labeled terminal. Compare the wire connections to the labels on your HVAC equipment control board. Common wiring errors that cause calibration loops include swapping the Y1 and Y2 wires, connecting the G wire to the wrong terminal, or having a loose R wire that intermittently loses power. Push each wire firmly into its terminal.

5

Reset Ecobee HVAC Configuration

If wiring is correct but calibration keeps failing the Ecobee equipment configuration may be wrong. On the Ecobee go to Main Menu then Settings then Installation Settings then Equipment. Verify that the equipment type matches what you have such as conventional heat, heat pump, or dual fuel. Verify that the wiring configuration shown on the screen matches the actual wires connected. If anything is wrong correct it and the Ecobee will recalibrate with the correct equipment profile.

Quick Solutions

Replace air filter if dirty or clogged
Check thermostat wiring connections at both Ecobee and HVAC equipment
Power cycle the HVAC system by turning breaker off for 60 seconds
Verify HVAC equipment is actually producing heated or cooled air
Move Ecobee away from heat sources that affect its temperature reading
Contact HVAC technician if equipment is short cycling

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

After resolving the calibration issue monitor the system through at least 3 full heating or cooling cycles to confirm it runs normally. The Ecobee app shows system runtime in the Home IQ section under System Monitor. Each cycle should run for at least 10 to 15 minutes. If cycles are very short the HVAC system may still be short cycling.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • HVAC system short cycling and shutting off before producing
  • Thermostat wired incorrectly causing Ecobee to misread HVAC signals
  • Air filter severely clogged restricting airflow so temperature does
  • HVAC equipment failure where system turns on but does
  • Ecobee temperature sensor inaccurate
