Problem Description

Your Ecobee thermostat's Follow Me feature is not working — the temperature doesn't adjust based on which room you're in. Follow Me uses the occupancy sensors in the thermostat and remote sensors to detect which rooms are occupied and prioritize those temperatures. The feature requires at least one remote sensor paired with the thermostat.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Follow Me uses the occupancy sensors in your ecobee SmartSensors to weight the temperature reading toward occupied rooms. But it only works if you have sensors assigned to the active Comfort Setting — so if you are in Home mode, the sensors need to be checked on in the Home comfort profile. The occupancy detection itself uses passive infrared and takes about 5 minutes to register presence, and it needs motion roughly every 30 minutes to maintain the occupied state. If someone sits perfectly still reading a book, Follow Me thinks the room is empty and stops weighting that sensor. Also, Follow Me is disabled during Sleep mode by design, so it will not work overnight.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off your HVAC system at the breaker before removing the thermostat or touching wires. Incorrect wiring can damage both the thermostat and your HVAC equipment resulting in expensive repairs. If unsure about wiring consult an HVAC technician.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

What Follow Me does

Follow Me uses the occupancy sensors in your Ecobee SmartSensors and the thermostat itself to detect which rooms are occupied, then prioritises those rooms' temperature readings for heating and cooling decisions. If you are in the bedroom and the living room is empty, the thermostat targets the bedroom temperature instead of averaging all sensors. It does not redirect airflow — it changes which temperature reading the thermostat uses as its target.

2

Make sure Follow Me is enabled

On the thermostat, go to Settings > Comfort Settings > Follow Me and make sure it is toggled on. In the Ecobee app, go to Thermostat > Comfort Settings > Follow Me. If it is already on but not working, check that at least two sensors are included in your current comfort profile — Follow Me needs multiple temperature readings to compare. A single sensor gives it nothing to prioritise.

3

Check which sensors are included in comfort profiles

Follow Me only considers sensors that are enabled for the current comfort profile. Go to Settings > Comfort Settings and check each profile (Home, Away, Sleep). Each profile lists which sensors participate. If a sensor is unchecked in the current profile, Follow Me ignores it even if someone is standing next to it. Make sure every room sensor you care about is checked in the relevant profiles.

4

Verify sensors are detecting occupancy

SmartSensors detect occupancy using a passive infrared (PIR) motion detector. If the sensor is mounted in a location where it cannot detect movement — inside a bookshelf, behind furniture, or aimed at a wall — it will not report occupancy. The PIR sensor has about a 120-degree detection cone. Make sure the sensor has clear line of sight to the area where people sit or move. On the thermostat, go to Sensors to see the current occupancy status of each sensor. If a sensor always shows unoccupied even when someone is in the room, it needs repositioning.

5

Understand Follow Me limitations

Follow Me updates which room to target every 30 minutes based on averaged occupancy data — it is not instant. If you walk into a room and expect the temperature to adjust within minutes, that is not how it works. The thermostat waits to confirm sustained occupancy before shifting its target. Also, Follow Me cannot do anything about rooms that are inherently hard to heat or cool (far from the HVAC unit, poor insulation). It targets the temperature reading, but if the HVAC system cannot physically reach that temperature in that room, Follow Me will not solve it.

Quick Solutions

Check and reseat all thermostat wires
Reconnect to WiFi and verify app control
Test heating and cooling modes separately
Optimize schedule for energy savings
Calibrate temperature offset if reading is off
Update firmware and verify HVAC compatibility

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use the thermostat energy reports to find patterns in your heating and cooling usage. Setting back the temperature just 3 degrees when you leave for work can save 5 to 10 percent on your annual energy bill without any comfort sacrifice.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
