Problem Description

Your whole-home humidifier connected to an Ecobee thermostat will not turn on, the humidity stays low, or it runs constantly. Because the Ecobee only sends the signal to an accessory it has to be told about, most problems are the accessory configuration, the Frost Control setting, or the humidifier wiring - not the thermostat itself.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The most common Ecobee humidifier surprise is Frost Control: in Auto mode the thermostat lowers the humidity target as the outdoor temperature drops, to keep condensation off your windows, so a low reading on a cold day is often correct, not broken. Past that, a humidifier that never runs is usually either not configured under Installation Settings > Equipment, not wired to the ACC terminals, or set to humidify only during a heating call. And the ecobee only sends the signal, so if it is calling for humidity but nothing happens, the humidifier's own water supply, solenoid, and humidistat are the next things to check. The settings are yours to change; any wiring is an HVAC pro job.

Symptoms

  • The humidifier never runs
  • Indoor humidity stays low
  • The humidifier runs constantly
  • You cannot find humidifier settings on the ecobee
  • The humidity target will not hold
  • Windows fog up or the air is bone dry
  • The humidifier option is missing in the menu
  • It only runs when the furnace is heating

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • The humidifier is not wired to the ACC accessory terminals
  • The accessory is not configured in Installation Settings
  • Frost Control is lowering the target in cold weather
  • It is set to humidify only during a heating call
  • The humidifier's own humidistat or water supply is off
  • No free accessory terminal on a 2-wire (PEK) setup
  • The wrong accessory type is selected
  • The ecobee is not reading humidity correctly

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

HVAC safety: configuring humidify settings on the ecobee screen is safe, but wiring the humidifier, its solenoid, or the accessory (ACC) terminals involves 24V HVAC connections and should be done by a licensed HVAC professional. Turn off power at the furnace before any wiring. Work of this kind is best carried out by a licensed HVAC technician. If you choose to proceed yourself, you do so entirely at your own risk. Step-by-Step Solution

1

Confirm the wiring

A whole-home humidifier connects to the ecobee's accessory terminals (labeled ACC+ and ACC-, or ACC/HUM depending on model). If it was never wired there, the ecobee cannot control it. Wiring the humidifier, solenoid, and accessory terminals is an HVAC professional task.

2

Add it in Equipment settings

On the ecobee go to Main Menu > Settings > Installation Settings > Equipment (Thresholds) and add or enable Humidifier. If it is not configured here, no humidity controls appear and it never runs.

3

Set the humidify mode

Choose Auto (Frost Control) or Manual. In Manual you set a fixed target percentage. In Frost Control the ecobee automatically lowers the target as it gets colder outside to prevent window condensation - so a low reading on a cold day can be correct behavior, not a fault.

4

Check when it is allowed to humidify

Some setups only run the humidifier during a heating call so the furnace fan moves air. If there is no heat call, it will not run. Adjust the setting to humidify with the fan or independently if you want it to run more often.

5

Verify the humidifier hardware

The ecobee only sends the signal. Confirm the humidifier's own humidistat is not set low or off, the water supply valve is open, the solenoid clicks when it calls, and the water panel or pad is not clogged.

6

Fix a humidifier that runs nonstop

Lower the target or switch to Frost Control, and confirm the ecobee reads humidity correctly under Main Menu > System. A stuck-on humidifier is usually a target set too high or a wiring short holding the accessory energized.

7

Check for a missing accessory terminal

Lite models and 2-wire installations using the PEK may not have a free accessory terminal. Confirm your wiring supports an accessory; if it does not, adding one is a wiring change for a professional.

8

Know when to call a pro

Changing humidify settings on the ecobee is safe to do yourself. Any change to the humidifier wiring, solenoid, or bypass/powered humidifier connections is a licensed HVAC professional's job - turn off power at the furnace first.

Quick Solutions

Wire the humidifier to the ACC+/ACC- terminals
Add and configure Humidifier in Equipment settings
Understand Frost Control lowers the target when cold
Set when it may humidify (with heat or independently)
Check the humidifier's humidistat, water, and solenoid
Confirm your wiring supports an accessory
Select the correct accessory type
Lower the target if it runs constantly

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Decision point

If the fix does not hold, check the matching replacement before another reset cycle.

Pro Tip

Frost Control is the big surprise: in Auto mode the ecobee deliberately lowers the humidity target as it gets colder outside to keep condensation off your windows, so low humidity on a cold day is often the thermostat working correctly rather than a fault.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • The humidifier is not wired to the ACC accessory
  • The accessory is not configured in Installation Settings
  • Frost Control is lowering the target in cold weather
  • It is set to humidify only during a heating
  • The humidifier's own humidistat or water supply is off
