- HVAC circuit breaker tripped cutting power to the equipment
- 3-amp or 5-amp fuse blown on the HVAC control board
- Condensate drain overflow switch triggered shutting down the system
Problem Description
Your Ecobee thermostat is calling for heating or cooling but the screen shows No Equipment Running or the HVAC system does not turn on. The Ecobee is sending the signal to your HVAC equipment but the equipment is not responding. The thermostat is functioning correctly and has power but the HVAC system is ignoring the command to start. Your home will not heat or cool until this issue is resolved. This can be caused by blown fuses, tripped breakers, safety switches, or equipment failures.
Symptoms
- Ecobee shows calling for heat or cool but nothing happens
- System status in app shows no equipment running
- Temperature continues to drift away from the set point
- Fan may run but no heated or cooled air is produced
- Equipment was working then stopped responding to thermostat commands
- Ecobee shows correct wiring but equipment will not activate
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- HVAC circuit breaker tripped cutting power to the equipment
- 3-amp or 5-amp fuse blown on the HVAC control board
- Condensate drain overflow switch triggered shutting down the system
- High limit safety switch tripped due to overheating from clogged filter
- Contactor or relay failure in the HVAC equipment
- Thermostat wiring break between the wall and the HVAC equipment
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
If the HVAC fuse blows repeatedly after replacement do not keep replacing fuses. A repeatedly blown fuse indicates a wiring short circuit that could cause a fire. Turn off the HVAC breaker and call a licensed HVAC technician to find and repair the short.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check HVAC Circuit Breakers
Go to your electrical panel and find the breaker labeled Furnace, Air Handler, or HVAC. Verify it is in the ON position. If it tripped to the middle position or OFF turn it fully off then back on. Also check for a separate breaker for the outdoor AC unit or heat pump. A tripped breaker is the simplest cause of no equipment running. After resetting the breaker wait 5 minutes then check if the Ecobee can start the equipment.
Check the HVAC Control Board Fuse
Open your furnace or air handler front panel. Locate the control board which is a circuit board with wires attached. Find the small automotive-style fuse typically 3-amp or 5-amp. Pull it out and inspect. If the metal strip inside is broken or blackened the fuse is blown. Replace with an identical fuse from a hardware store. A blown fuse means a short circuit occurred. If the fuse blows again immediately there is a wiring problem that needs professional diagnosis.
Check the Condensate Drain
Air conditioning systems produce condensation that drains through a PVC pipe. If clogged water fills the drain pan and a float switch shuts down the system to prevent water damage. Find the drain pan under your air handler. If it has standing water the drain is clogged. Use a wet-dry vacuum on the drain pipe outlet or pour distilled vinegar through the drain access point to dissolve the clog. After clearing check that the float switch clicks back down.
Check Safety Switches
Your HVAC system has safety switches that shut it down if conditions are dangerous. The high limit switch trips if the furnace overheats usually from restricted airflow caused by a dirty filter. Replace the filter. The pressure switch trips if the exhaust vent is blocked. Check outside for obstructions. The door switch shuts the system off if the furnace panel is not properly closed. Ensure panels are firmly seated. After addressing the cause power cycle the system to reset the safety lockout.

If breakers are on and fuses are good but equipment still does not run there may be a wiring break between the thermostat and the equipment. At the HVAC control board use a multimeter to check for 24V AC between the R and C terminals. If no voltage the transformer may have failed. Then check for voltage on the W terminal during a heat call or Y terminal during a cool call. If the Ecobee is calling but no voltage appears on the appropriate terminal there is a break in the wire that needs to be found and repaired.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
The Ecobee app shows detailed system status under Home IQ then System Monitor. You can see exactly when the thermostat called for heating or cooling and whether the equipment responded. This timeline is extremely helpful for diagnosing intermittent no equipment running issues where the system works sometimes but not always.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
- HVAC circuit breaker tripped cutting power to the equipment
- 3-amp or 5-amp fuse blown on the HVAC control
- Condensate drain overflow switch triggered shutting down the system
- High limit safety switch tripped
- Contactor or relay failure in the HVAC equipment
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
