Problem Description

Your Ecobee Thermostat is having trouble during initial setup, installation, or configuration. Getting the Thermostat properly connected and configured is essential before it can be controlled through the Ecobee app or integrated with your smart home system. Specifically, the issue involves pek installation issues. The steps below walk you through diagnosing the root cause and applying proven fixes so your Thermostat works reliably again.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The PEK power extender kit is ecobee's workaround for homes without a C-wire. It installs at the furnace control board and essentially steals power from the existing thermostat wires by rapidly switching between them. The number one installation mistake is people connecting the PEK wires to the wrong terminals on the furnace board — the PEK has its own labeled terminals that replace your existing connections, so every wire from the thermostat cable goes through the PEK first. If you connect the thermostat wires directly to the board and also connect the PEK, you will blow the fuse. The PEK also does not work well with some variable-speed furnaces and two-stage systems because the rapid switching can confuse the furnace control board.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off your HVAC system at the breaker before removing the thermostat or touching wires. Incorrect wiring can damage both the thermostat and your HVAC equipment resulting in expensive repairs. If unsure about wiring consult an HVAC technician.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

What the PEK does and when you need it

The Power Extender Kit creates a virtual C wire using your existing thermostat wiring. You need it only if your home does not have a dedicated C (common) wire running between the thermostat and furnace. Most homes built before 2000 have only 4 wires (R, W, Y, G) — the PEK uses the existing wires plus a small module at the furnace to provide continuous 24V power to the thermostat. If you already have a C wire at the thermostat, you do not need the PEK.

2

Install the PEK at the furnace control board

Turn off HVAC power at the breaker. Open the furnace access panel and locate the control board — it has terminal blocks labelled R, W, Y, G, C where your thermostat wires connect. Disconnect all thermostat wires from the control board terminals. Connect the PEK module's five coloured wires to the matching terminals on the control board (R to R, W to W, Y to Y, G to G, C to C). Then connect your original thermostat wires to the matching terminals on the PEK module itself. The PEK sits between your wires and the control board.

3

Fix the most common PEK installation mistake

The number one PEK failure is connecting wires to the wrong terminals. If you swap even one wire, the system either will not power on or will run the wrong equipment (fan runs instead of heat, AC runs instead of fan). Before disconnecting anything, take a clear photo of every wire on the control board with the terminal labels visible. Label each wire with the included stickers. Double-check every connection on both sides of the PEK — control board side and thermostat wire side — before turning power back on.

4

Fix thermostat not powering on after PEK install

If the thermostat screen stays blank after installing the PEK, check the following: Is the furnace breaker back on? Is the furnace door safety switch engaged (door must be fully closed)? Are the R and C connections secure on both sides of the PEK? Pull each wire out and reinsert it firmly. A wire that looks connected but is not making contact is the most common cause of a dead thermostat after PEK installation.

5

Fix HVAC running incorrectly after PEK install

If the fan runs constantly, heat runs when cooling is called, or the system short-cycles after PEK installation, the wires are connected to the wrong terminals on the PEK. Turn off power immediately. Compare your photo of the original wiring to the current connections. The PEK does not change which wire goes to which function — R is still R, W is still W. If the original wiring was R=red, W=white, Y=yellow, G=green, then those same wires connect to those same letters on the PEK. Swap any incorrect connections and test again.

Quick Solutions

Check and reseat all thermostat wires
Reconnect to WiFi and verify app control
Test heating and cooling modes separately
Optimize schedule for energy savings
Calibrate temperature offset if reading is off
Update firmware and verify HVAC compatibility

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use the thermostat energy reports to find patterns in your heating and cooling usage. Setting back the temperature just 3 degrees when you leave for work can save 5 to 10 percent on your annual energy bill without any comfort sacrifice.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
