- Sensor placed behind furniture blocking PIR view
- People sitting still not triggering motion sensor
- Sensor mounted too high or facing wrong direction
Problem Description
Your Ecobee Smart Sensor shows the room as unoccupied even when people are sitting in it. The sensor does not register occupancy so your thermostat ignores that room for comfort settings. People are clearly in the room but the Ecobee app shows it empty. This defeats the purpose of having room sensors.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A SmartSensor not detecting occupancy usually has its PIR view blocked or is placed poorly — behind furniture, aimed at a wall, or in a low-traffic corner, so people don't cross its field. It senses motion/heat like any PIR.
Start by moving the sensor to an open spot around 4-5 feet up, aimed across where people actually move (not into a corner or behind a plant/TV), and confirm nothing blocks its lens. Occupancy drives comfort settings and Smart Home/Away, so placement across the room's traffic path is what makes it reliable.
Symptoms
- Sensor shows unoccupied while people are in room
- Room temperature ignored in Smart Home/Away
- Sensor worked before but stopped detecting motion
- Occupancy icon never turns on in app
- Follow Me feature ignores this room
- Sensor shows correct temperature but wrong occupancy
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Sensor placed behind furniture blocking PIR view
- People sitting still not triggering motion sensor
- Sensor mounted too high or facing wrong direction
- PIR sensor dirty or obstructed
- Sensor battery too low affecting function
- Sensor fallen from mount changing detection angle
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Pets moving through the room will trigger occupancy detection. If you want to exclude pet areas place sensors where pets cannot trigger them.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check Sensor Placement
Ecobee sensors use passive infrared to detect motion and body heat. They need a clear view of the room. If placed behind furniture on a high shelf or facing a wall they cannot see people. Mount at 4-5 feet height on a wall or shelf edge with unobstructed view of where people sit.
Understand PIR Limitations
PIR sensors detect motion not presence. Someone sitting perfectly still for 30 plus minutes may register as unoccupied. This is normal. The sensor will redetect when the person moves even slightly. For rooms where people sit still for long periods place sensor where it sees entrance so it catches people coming and going.
Clean Sensor Lens
Dust on the sensor lens blocks infrared detection. Remove sensor from mount and gently wipe the curved lens area with a soft dry cloth. Do not use cleaning chemicals. Replace on mount and test by walking through room. Sensor should show occupied within seconds of movement.

$19.99Replace Battery Proactively
Even if the app shows battery OK the battery may be too weak for reliable occupancy detection. Ecobee sensors use CR2032 batteries. Replace the battery and test detection again. Fresh battery ensures maximum sensor sensitivity. Batteries last about 2 years with normal use.

$6.59Verify Comfort Setting Participation
In the Ecobee app tap the sensor then Participation. Make sure the sensor participates in the comfort settings you care about like Home and Sleep. If a sensor is excluded from a comfort setting its occupancy data is ignored during that setting. Enable participation for all relevant settings.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
Ecobee sensors prioritize temperature accuracy over occupancy speed. Temperature updates every 15 minutes but occupancy updates within seconds of motion.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Sensor placed behind furniture blocking PIR view
- People sitting still not triggering motion sensor
- Sensor mounted too high or facing wrong direction
- PIR sensor dirty or obstructed
- Sensor battery too low affecting function
