Your Ecobee SmartSensor reports a temperature that is 10 to 20 degrees higher or lower than the actual room temperature. The thermostat uses this incorrect reading to control HVAC making your home uncomfortable because it heats or cools based on wrong data.

Verify Temperature Accuracy
Place a separate digital thermometer next to the Ecobee SmartSensor and wait 15 minutes for both to stabilize. Compare readings.
