- Sensor placed near heat source like lamp electronics or vent
- Direct sunlight hitting the sensor during part of the day
- Sensor mounted on exterior wall absorbing outside temperature
Problem Description
Your Ecobee SmartSensor reports a temperature that is 10 to 20 degrees higher or lower than the actual room temperature. The thermostat uses this incorrect reading to control HVAC making your home uncomfortable because it heats or cools based on wrong data.
Symptoms
- Sensor shows temperature 10 or more degrees off from reality
- Room feels hot but sensor reads much cooler than actual
- HVAC runs constantly because sensor reports wrong temperature
- Sensor reading disagrees with a separate thermometer by 15 degrees
- Temperature reading suddenly jumped to an incorrect value
- Sensor worked accurately for months then became inaccurate
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Sensor placed near heat source like lamp electronics or vent
- Direct sunlight hitting the sensor during part of the day
- Sensor mounted on exterior wall absorbing outside temperature
- Low battery causing erratic sensor readings
- Sensor firmware glitch reporting stale temperature data
- Sensor placed too high near ceiling where hot air accumulates
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not place the Ecobee SmartSensor inside a cabinet or behind furniture. Enclosed spaces trap heat from the sensor battery and electronics causing it to read several degrees higher than the actual room temperature.

Step-by-Step Solution
Verify Temperature Accuracy
Place a separate digital thermometer next to the Ecobee SmartSensor and wait 15 minutes for both to stabilize. Compare readings. If they differ by more than 3 degrees the sensor placement or hardware is the issue. Note the difference and whether the sensor reads high or low. This baseline tells you exactly how far off the sensor is.

$119.99Check Sensor Placement
The sensor should be on an interior wall at 4 to 5 feet height away from windows vents electronics and direct sunlight. Common mistakes include placing it near a TV or lamp that radiates heat above a heating vent where warm air hits it directly or on an exterior wall where outside temperature bleeds through. Relocate to a neutral interior wall and recheck after 30 minutes.
Replace the Battery
A low battery can cause the sensor to report erratic or stale temperature readings. Pull the sensor off its mount and open the battery compartment. Replace the CR2477 lithium coin cell with a fresh one. After replacement the sensor may take up to 15 minutes to recalibrate and report accurate temperature. Check the ecobee app to confirm the sensor comes back online.

$6.19Remove and Re-Add Sensor
In the ecobee app go to Settings then Sensors and select the problematic sensor. Tap Remove Sensor. Pull the battery from the sensor and wait 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery and go through the add sensor process in the ecobee app. This forces a fresh connection and temperature calibration. The sensor will pair within 2 minutes if within range of the thermostat.
Test in Different Location
If the sensor still reads wrong after battery replacement and re-pairing move it to a completely different room and compare with a thermometer there. If it still reads 10 or more degrees off in a neutral location the sensor hardware may be defective. Contact ecobee support for warranty replacement. If it reads correctly in the new location the original room has an environmental factor causing the error.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Schedules that skip randomly are usually a daylight-saving holdover — delete and recreate the schedule to clear the corrupted entry.
Mount sensors on interior walls away from doors. Hallways and room centers are ideal locations. Avoid bathrooms and kitchens where humidity and cooking heat cause temporary temperature spikes.
Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
