Problem Description

Your Ecobee thermostat is stuck on the calibrating screen for hours and will not start heating or cooling. The screen shows calibrating with a spinning animation but never completes. Your home is getting too hot or too cold while you wait. This happens most often after a power outage installation or firmware update and is usually caused by the thermostat not detecting proper HVAC wiring signals.

Symptoms

  • Stuck on calibrating screen for hours
  • HVAC not running while calibrating
  • Thermostat reboots then goes back to calibrating
  • Calibrating started after power outage
  • Screen shows calibrating after firmware update
  • Home temperature drifting with no HVAC running

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • HVAC system not providing 24V power properly
  • Loose wire connection at thermostat backplate
  • Power Extender Kit wiring issue
  • C-wire not connected or providing insufficient power
  • Firmware update interrupted leaving thermostat in limbo
  • Circuit breaker for HVAC tripped during outage

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never touch HVAC wires without turning off the circuit breaker first. HVAC wiring carries 24V AC which can damage the thermostat or give a shock if wires touch each other.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Power Cycle HVAC System

Turn off the HVAC circuit breaker for 30 seconds then turn it back on. Go to the thermostat and pull it off the backplate for 30 seconds then reattach. This forces a fresh calibration cycle. The thermostat needs stable 24V power from the HVAC transformer to calibrate successfully.

2

Check Wiring

Pull the thermostat off the backplate and check that all wires are firmly inserted into the correct terminals. A loose R-wire means no power. A loose C-wire means unstable power. Push each wire firmly until you feel it click. Compare wiring to your installation photo or the Ecobee wiring diagram.

3

Check Circuit Breaker

Verify the HVAC circuit breaker is fully on. After a power outage the breaker may have tripped to the middle position which looks on but is actually tripped. Flip it fully off then fully on. Also check the HVAC unit external switch usually located on the furnace or air handler.

4

Reinstall Power Extender Kit

If you used the Ecobee Power Extender Kit PEK instead of a C-wire check the PEK at the furnace end. Ensure all wires are connected to the correct PEK terminals and the PEK terminals match the furnace control board. A loose PEK wire causes intermittent power that prevents calibration from completing.

5

Factory Reset

If calibrating persists after checking everything press the physical reset button on the thermostat with a paperclip. Or go to Main Menu then Settings then Reset then Reset All. The thermostat will restart and walk through initial setup including calibration with a fresh start. Reconfigure WiFi and schedule after reset.

Quick Solutions

Power cycle the thermostat and HVAC
Check wiring connections at backplate
Verify HVAC circuit breaker is on
Reinstall Power Extender Kit if used
Factory reset thermostat
Check C-wire connection

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Schedules that skip randomly are usually a daylight-saving holdover — delete and recreate the schedule to clear the corrupted entry.

Pro Tip

Take a photo of your wiring before removing the thermostat from the backplate. This saves time if you need to reinstall or contact Ecobee support with your exact wiring configuration.

Real-World Insight

Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
