Why Won't Ecobee Built-In Microphone or Intercom Work?

The built-in microphone on your Ecobee Premium or SmartThermostat does not respond to voice commands, does not hear you, or the intercom feature between Ecobee devices is not working. If the mic privacy slider on the side of the thermostat is in the off position, all microphone functions are disabled.

Check that your model supports voice control
Built-in voice control (Alexa) is only available on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Enhanced. The Lite and Ecobee3 Lite do not have microphones or speakers. If you have a Premium or Enhanced, check that the microphone is not muted — a red indicator on the thermostat means the mic is off. Tap the mute button to toggle it. On the Premium, the microphone is part of the front panel.
Enable and configure Alexa
Go to Settings > Voice Assistant on the thermostat. Make sure Alexa is enabled and linked to your Amazon account. If Alexa is not set up, follow the prompts to sign into your Amazon account. Link it to the same Ecobee account that your thermostat is registered to. After linking, say "Alexa, discover devices" and the thermostat should appear in your Alexa device list.
Use Google Assistant or Siri instead
If you prefer Google Assistant or Siri over Alexa, you can control the Ecobee through those platforms — but not through the thermostat's built-in microphone. The built-in mic only supports Alexa. For Google Assistant, link Ecobee in the Google Home app. For Siri, set up the Ecobee through Apple HomeKit by scanning the HomeKit code on the back of the thermostat. Both allow voice control through their respective speakers and phones, just not through the thermostat itself.
