Problem Description

The built-in microphone on your Ecobee Premium or SmartThermostat does not respond to voice commands, does not hear you, or the intercom feature between Ecobee devices is not working. The Ecobee has a built-in speaker and microphone that supports Alexa voice control directly on the thermostat (without an Echo) and room-to-room intercom. If the mic privacy slider on the side of the thermostat is in the off position, all microphone functions are disabled.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Built-in voice control (Alexa) is only on the speaker-and-mic models — the Smart Thermostat Premium and the older SmartThermostat — so the first thing to check is that your model even has it; the Lite and Essential tiers don't. After that, the mic mute and setup are the usual causes.

Start by confirming your model supports built-in Alexa, then check the microphone isn't muted and that Alexa is enabled and your Amazon account linked in settings. Keep it online and reduce background noise; a muted mic or the wrong model explains most "voice not working" reports.

Symptoms

  • Voice/Alexa not responding
  • No response to wake word
  • Mic seems off
  • Only some commands work
  • Voice control missing
  • Works then stops
  • Mic muted
  • Model does not have voice

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Model isn't Premium/SmartThermostat (no built-in Alexa)
  • Microphone muted
  • Voice/Alexa not enabled or set up
  • Thermostat offline
  • Background noise
  • Alexa account not linked
  • Firmware out of date
  • Mic obstructed

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off your HVAC system at the breaker before removing the thermostat or touching wires. Incorrect wiring can damage both the thermostat and your HVAC equipment resulting in expensive repairs. If unsure about wiring consult an HVAC technician.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check that your model supports voice control

Built-in voice control (Alexa) is only available on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Enhanced. The Lite and Ecobee3 Lite do not have microphones or speakers. If you have a Premium or Enhanced, check that the microphone is not muted — a red indicator on the thermostat means the mic is off. Tap the mute button to toggle it. On the Premium, the microphone is part of the front panel.

2

Enable and configure Alexa

Go to Settings > Voice Assistant on the thermostat. Make sure Alexa is enabled and linked to your Amazon account. If Alexa is not set up, follow the prompts to sign into your Amazon account. After linking, say "Alexa, what time is it" to test. If Alexa responds, voice control is working. If it does not respond, check your WiFi connection — Alexa requires an active internet connection for all voice processing.

3

Fix Alexa not hearing you

If the mic is unmuted but Alexa does not respond to "Alexa," check for background noise near the thermostat. HVAC vents, kitchen appliances, and nearby speakers can mask the wake word. Speak clearly from within 10 feet of the thermostat. The thermostat's microphone is less sensitive than a dedicated Echo speaker — it has fewer microphones and a smaller pickup range. If your home is noisy, consider controlling the thermostat through an Echo device in the same room instead.

4

Fix Alexa responding but not controlling the thermostat

If Alexa hears you but says it cannot find the thermostat or cannot change the temperature, the Ecobee skill may not be linked in the Alexa app. Open the Alexa app on your phone, go to More > Skills & Games, search for Ecobee, and enable the skill. Link it to the same Ecobee account that your thermostat is registered to. After linking, say "Alexa, discover devices" and the thermostat should appear in your Alexa device list.

5

Use Google Assistant or Siri instead

If you prefer Google Assistant or Siri over Alexa, you can control the Ecobee through those platforms — but not through the thermostat's built-in microphone. The built-in mic only supports Alexa. For Google Assistant, link Ecobee in the Google Home app. For Siri, set up the Ecobee through Apple HomeKit by scanning the HomeKit code on the back of the thermostat. Both allow voice control through their respective speakers and phones, just not through the thermostat itself.

Quick Solutions

Confirm your model has built-in voice (Premium)
Unmute the microphone
Enable and set up Alexa on the thermostat
Confirm the thermostat is online
Reduce background noise
Link your Alexa/Amazon account
Update firmware
Keep the mic area clear

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use the thermostat energy reports to find patterns in your heating and cooling usage. Setting back the temperature just 3 degrees when you leave for work can save 5 to 10 percent on your annual energy bill without any comfort sacrifice.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
