Overview

You need to install a new Ecobee SmartThermostat (replacing an existing thermostat or as a new installation). The Ecobee SmartThermostat is a WiFi-connected thermostat that replaces your existing wall-mounted thermostat. Installation involves removing the old thermostat, connecting the Ecobee wiring, mounting the new unit, and completing the setup wizard. The most common installation issue is the C-wire (common wire) — the Ecobee requires continuous power through a C-wire, and many older homes only have 4 wires (no C-wire) at the thermostat location.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The C-wire issue is the number one Ecobee installation challenge. About 40% of homes built before 2000 do not have a C-wire at the thermostat location. The included Power Extender Kit (PEK) solves this without running new wire, but it requires installation at the furnace, which intimidates some users. The second most common issue is wire labeling — older thermostats sometimes have non-standard wire colors or unlabeled terminals, and connecting wires to the wrong Ecobee terminal can blow the HVAC control board fuse (a 3-5 amp automotive fuse that is cheap but requires opening the furnace to replace).

Installation Steps

1

Photograph and label your existing wires

Before removing your old thermostat, take a clear photo of the wiring. Each wire is connected to a labeled terminal (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.). Write down which color wire goes to which terminal letter. These labels tell the Ecobee which HVAC system components are connected. Common setups: R (24V power), W (heat), Y (cooling), G (fan), C (common/return). If you have Rh and Rc, you have separate heating and cooling transformers. Do not disconnect any wires until you have a clear photo and notes.

2

Check for a C-wire

Look at the terminals on your old thermostat. If there is a wire connected to the C terminal, you have a C-wire — the installation is simple. If there is no C-wire but you see an unused wire in the wall (often blue or brown), you can use it as a C-wire by connecting it at both the thermostat and the furnace control board. If you have no extra wires, use the included Ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK). The PEK installs at the furnace and sends power through the existing G (fan) wire, using software to control the fan instead. Follow the PEK installation guide in the Ecobee app.

3

Mount the Ecobee backplate and connect wires

Remove your old thermostat from the wall plate. If the Ecobee backplate screw holes do not align with the old ones, use the included drywall anchors to drill new holes. Feed the wires through the center opening of the Ecobee backplate and screw it to the wall. Connect each wire to the matching terminal on the backplate — push the stripped wire end into the labeled terminal until it clicks. R goes to R (or Rc), W to W1, Y to Y1, G to G, C to C. If you have a heat pump, Y goes to Y1 and O/B goes to O/B. Each terminal is spring-loaded and accepts wires without screwing.

Power on and complete the setup wizard

Snap the thermostat display onto the backplate. If wiring is correct, the screen will illuminate within 15 seconds. The setup wizard will ask you to confirm which wires are connected, select your HVAC equipment type, and configure heating and cooling preferences. If the screen does not turn on: check that R and C wires are secure, verify the furnace breaker is on, and check that the furnace door panel is fully closed (many furnaces have a safety switch that cuts 24V power when the panel is open).

5

Connect to WiFi and register your account

The thermostat will prompt you to connect to your WiFi network. Select your 2.4GHz or 5GHz network and enter the password. Ecobee SmartThermostats support both bands. After WiFi connection, the thermostat will display a registration code. Open the Ecobee app or web portal, create an account (or log in), and enter the code to link the thermostat. This enables remote control, weather integration, scheduling, and smart home integrations (HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home).

6

Test heating and cooling

After setup, test both heating and cooling before buttoning everything up. Set the thermostat to Heat, set the temperature 5°F above current room temperature, and verify the furnace starts within 30 seconds. Then switch to Cool, set the temperature 5°F below, and verify the AC compressor starts. If heat works but cooling does not (or vice versa), check the Y and W wire connections. If the fan runs but there is no heat or cool, the equipment wiring at the furnace end may need attention. If everything works, set your preferred schedule and comfort settings.
