Overview

You need to pair a new Ecobee SmartSensor with your Ecobee thermostat for the first time. SmartSensors are wireless temperature and occupancy sensors that communicate with the thermostat over a 915MHz radio link (not WiFi or Bluetooth). They extend comfort management to rooms the thermostat cannot measure directly. Setup involves registering the sensor through the thermostat or the Ecobee app, naming it, and assigning it to a comfort setting. Problems during initial pairing include the thermostat not detecting the sensor, the sensor showing as unavailable immediately after pairing, or the pairing process timing out.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Ecobee SmartSensors use a proprietary 915MHz radio link — not WiFi, Zigbee, or Bluetooth — so WiFi signal strength is irrelevant. The sensors have excellent range (45 feet through walls) and the biggest setup issue is actually the battery: sensors with partially depleted batteries pair successfully but show unavailable within hours. Always use a fresh CR2032 for initial setup. The 4-digit code on the back is a fallback — automatic detection works about 90% of the time if the sensor is within 15 feet of the thermostat during pairing.

What's Included

  • Ecobee SmartSensor unit
  • Detachable stand for shelf placement
  • CR2477 coin-cell battery (pre-installed)
  • Adhesive wall-mounting strip
  • Your Ecobee thermostat is already installed
  • Your smartphone with the Ecobee app

Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.

Before You Start

  • An installed and working Ecobee thermostat
  • The Ecobee app on your smartphone
  • The plastic battery tab is removed
  • The sensor is within range of the thermostat
  • Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone
  • You are logged into your Ecobee account

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do

Warning

The CR2477 battery is pre-installed and should last approximately 5 years. Do not attempt to recharge it.

Installation Steps

1

Pull the battery tab or insert a fresh battery

New SmartSensors ship with a plastic battery tab preventing drain. Pull the tab to activate the sensor. The sensor has no power button — inserting a battery turns it on. If the sensor was used before: pop off the back cover by pressing the tab at the bottom, remove the CR2032 battery, wait 10 seconds, and insert a new one with the + side facing up. A fresh battery is critical for initial pairing — sensors with low batteries can pair but immediately show unavailable.

2

Start pairing from the thermostat or app

On the thermostat: tap the menu icon, go to Sensors, tap +, then Begin Pairing. The thermostat will scan for sensors for 2 minutes. On the Ecobee app: go to Thermostat, Sensors, and tap Add Sensor. Both methods work — the thermostat is more reliable because pairing happens directly between the thermostat radio and the sensor with no cloud dependency. During pairing, keep the sensor within 15 feet of the thermostat. The sensor does not need to be in its final location — pair it nearby, then move it.

3

Register the 4-digit code if automatic detection fails

If the thermostat does not automatically detect the sensor during pairing, you will be prompted to enter the 4-digit code printed on the back of the sensor. This code uniquely identifies the sensor and is required when multiple sensors are being set up simultaneously or when there is radio interference. The code is also printed on the sensor packaging. If the code entry fails with Sensor Not Found, the sensor battery may be dead, or the sensor is more than 45 feet from the thermostat (the maximum radio range through standard interior walls).

4

Name the sensor and assign it to comfort settings

After successful pairing, the thermostat asks you to name the sensor (e.g., Bedroom, Living Room, Basement). Then you assign it to Comfort Settings. In Home mode, the thermostat averages the temperature from the thermostat and all sensors assigned to Home. In Sleep mode, it uses only sensors assigned to Sleep. Assign bedroom sensors to Sleep and living area sensors to Home for the best comfort optimization. You can change these assignments later in the Ecobee app under Comfort Settings.

Installation Tips

Pull the plastic tab to activate the battery
Use the Ecobee app to pair the sensor
Place sensor in a room you want to monitor
Use the stand or adhesive strip to mount it
Place at 4-5 feet high on an interior wall
The battery should last for about 5 years

Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Pro Tip

Place the SmartSensor away from windows, heating vents, and direct sunlight to get the most accurate temperature readings.
