- Thermostat lost its Z-Wave connection to the panel
- AC circuit breaker tripped, cutting the outdoor unit
- Set to Heat or Off instead of Cool
Problem Description
Your Vivint smart thermostat is either not cooling your home, showing offline in the Vivint app, or not responding to commands. You set the thermostat to cool but the AC does not turn on, or the thermostat appears offline and you cannot control it remotely. This is annoying because the Vivint thermostat is part of your integrated smart home system and when it goes offline your automations, schedules, and remote control all stop working. The thermostat may display a temperature but refuse to activate the cooling system, or it may be completely unresponsive on the Vivint panel and app.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
This guide covers three overlapping symptoms because on a Vivint thermostat they often share a root cause: no cooling, showing offline, and not responding. The quickest wins are the simplest. Confirm the thermostat is actually set to Cool (not Heat or Off) and that the AC circuit breaker is on - a tripped breaker at the outdoor unit cuts cooling entirely while the thermostat still shows a temperature. If cooling was working and just stopped, also give it the compressor protection delay: after a mode change or power blip, the system deliberately waits several minutes before restarting the compressor, which looks like a dead AC but clears on its own.
When the thermostat itself is offline or unresponsive, the issue is power or the Z-Wave link to the Vivint panel. The Vivint thermostat needs a C-wire for steady power, so a blank or rebooting screen points at a missing or loose C-wire rather than a cooling fault. If the screen is fine but it won't respond in the app, the Z-Wave connection to the panel has likely dropped - rebooting the panel re-establishes it, and removing and re-adding the thermostat fixes a persistent offline state. Finally, rule out the AC's own safety cutoffs: a clogged air filter or a condensate overflow trips a safety switch that stops cooling regardless of what the thermostat commands, so replacing the filter and clearing the drain line are worth checking when the thermostat says cool but the AC stays silent.
Symptoms
- Set to cool but the AC doesn't turn on
- App shows the thermostat offline or unavailable
- Displays a temperature but won't respond to changes
- Cooling was working, then stopped
- Panel shows the thermostat disconnected
- Thermostat screen blank or frozen
- No response from the panel or app
- Fan runs but no cold air
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Thermostat lost its Z-Wave connection to the panel
- AC circuit breaker tripped, cutting the outdoor unit
- Set to Heat or Off instead of Cool
- Cooling lockout/compressor delay preventing start
- AC safety switch tripped (condensate overflow / clogged filter)
- Missing C-wire causing power loss (blank/reboot)
- Thermostat battery dead on battery-powered setups
- HVAC system fault unrelated to the thermostat
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
If your Vivint thermostat is part of an active Vivint monitoring plan and you remove it from the panel your Vivint monitoring center may receive an alert about a device offline or removed. Contact Vivint support at 800-216-5232 before making changes to avoid triggering unnecessary service calls or alerts to the monitoring center.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Thermostat Mode Setting
On the thermostat itself verify it is set to Cool mode. If it shows Heat, Auto, or Off the AC will not run in cool-only situations. Tap the mode button on the thermostat and cycle to Cool. Set the target temperature at least 3 degrees below the current room temperature to trigger the AC to start. If the thermostat is unresponsive to touch the screen may be frozen. Hold the thermostat for 10 seconds or remove it from the wall plate briefly to force a reboot.
Check AC Circuit Breaker
Go to your electrical panel and find the breaker for the AC unit or outdoor condenser. Verify it is in the ON position. If it tripped to the middle or OFF position flip it fully off then back on. Also check if there is a separate disconnect switch near the outdoor AC unit which is a small box on the wall near the unit with a pull-out handle or breaker. Make sure it is on. A tripped breaker is the most common reason the thermostat calls for cooling but nothing happens.
Reboot the Vivint Panel
The Vivint thermostat communicates with the Vivint panel via Z-Wave. If the thermostat shows offline the Z-Wave connection may have dropped. Reboot the Vivint panel by unplugging the power cable from the back then removing the backup battery. Wait 60 seconds. Reconnect the battery then plug the power cable back in. Wait 5 minutes for the panel to fully boot. The panel will re-establish connections with all Z-Wave devices including the thermostat.
Replace the Air Filter and Check Condensate
A severely clogged air filter causes the AC system to overheat and trip the high limit safety switch. A full condensate drain pan triggers the float switch shutting down the AC. Replace the air filter if it is dirty. Check the drain pan under your air handler for standing water. If water is present the drain line is clogged. Use a wet-dry vacuum on the drain outlet or pour distilled vinegar through the drain access to clear the clog. After addressing both reset the system by turning the AC breaker off for 30 seconds then back on.
Remove and Re-Add the Thermostat
If the thermostat remains offline after rebooting the panel you may need to remove it from the Vivint system and re-add it. On the Vivint panel go to Settings then Devices then find the thermostat. Select Remove Device and follow the prompts. Once removed go back to Devices then Add Device and follow the Z-Wave inclusion steps for the thermostat. This creates a fresh Z-Wave pairing. Note that you may need your Vivint installer code or to contact Vivint support to access device management on the panel.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.
The Vivint thermostat has a minimum cooling temperature setting. If the outdoor temperature is below a certain threshold the thermostat may block cooling to protect the AC compressor. Check the thermostat settings for a compressor protection or cooling lockout setting. In mild weather this can prevent the AC from running even when you set it to cool.
Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.
- Thermostat lost its Z-Wave connection to the panel
- AC circuit breaker tripped, cutting the outdoor unit
- Set to Heat or Off instead of Cool
- Cooling lockout/compressor delay preventing start
- AC safety switch tripped (condensate overflow / clogged filter)
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
