Problem Description

Someone presses your Arlo doorbell and you get a phone notification but your indoor chime does not ring. The doorbell records visitors fine but without the audible indoor chime you miss visitors when your phone is on silent. The Arlo doorbell requires either the existing wired chime to be connected properly or an Arlo Chime accessory for indoor sound.

Symptoms

  • Phone notification works but no indoor chime
  • Doorbell records video but house chime silent
  • Chime worked before but stopped after update
  • Traditional chime box does not ring
  • Arlo Chime accessory not sounding
  • Only hear doorbell ring outside not inside

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Arlo doorbell not wired to existing chime
  • Chime type set incorrectly in app
  • Existing doorbell transformer too weak
  • Arlo Chime accessory disconnected from WiFi
  • Silent mode enabled in Arlo app
  • Wiring loose at doorbell or chime box

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Turn off the breaker before touching any doorbell wiring. Doorbell transformers carry low voltage but the transformer input side connects to 120V house power which is dangerous.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Chime Settings

In the Arlo app go to the doorbell then Settings then Chime. Select your chime type mechanical or digital. If set wrong the doorbell sends the wrong signal and your chime stays silent. Mechanical chimes use a ding-dong striker. Digital chimes use an electronic speaker. Setting the wrong type prevents the chime from activating.

Check Silent Mode

In the Arlo app check if the doorbell is in Silent Mode. This mutes the indoor chime while still recording and sending notifications. Disable Silent Mode to restore the indoor ring. Also check if your Arlo mode is set to a custom mode that silences the chime.

3

Check Transformer

Arlo wired doorbells need a 16-24V AC transformer. Many old homes have 10V transformers that are too weak. Check your transformer voltage with a multimeter or look at the label on the transformer usually located near the main electrical panel. If below 16V replace with a 24V 40VA transformer.

4

Check Wiring

At the doorbell check that both wires are firmly connected to the terminals. At the chime box check that the front door terminal and transformer terminal wires are secure. A loose wire breaks the circuit and the chime cannot ring. If you have a battery Arlo doorbell it does not wire to a traditional chime at all.

Add Arlo Chime

If you have the battery-powered Arlo doorbell with no existing wired chime you need to buy the Arlo Chime accessory. It plugs into any outlet and connects via WiFi. Set it up in the Arlo app under Accessories. It provides the indoor ring sound that the battery doorbell cannot produce through traditional wiring.

Quick Solutions

Check chime type setting in Arlo app
Verify wiring to existing chime box
Upgrade doorbell transformer if too weak
Reconnect Arlo Chime to WiFi
Disable silent mode in app
Add Arlo Chime if no wired chime exists

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

If you have a digital chime and it does not work with Arlo try switching the chime type setting to mechanical and vice versa. Some chimes are mislabeled and respond to the opposite signal type.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
