About Smart Speaker & Audio Brands
Sonos wins on sound quality — the Era 300 is the best-sounding smart speaker you can buy, and the multi-room system works across Alexa, Google, and AirPlay without forcing you into one ecosystem. Amazon Echo dominates on smart home control with Alexa supporting more devices than any other assistant and the Echo lineup starting at $25. Apple HomePod sounds excellent and has the tightest privacy controls, but only works well in an Apple household — Siri's smart home support is narrower than Alexa or Google. Google Nest Audio hits the best price-to-sound ratio at $100 and Google Assistant is the most accurate at answering general questions. The real decision is ecosystem: once you commit to one voice assistant for your smart home, switching is painful.
Buying Tips
- Sonos works with Alexa, Google, and AirPlay — it is the only brand that does not lock you in
- Amazon Echo is the cheapest way to voice-control smart home devices in every room
- Apple HomePod only makes sense if your household is already on iPhones and Apple Home
- For multi-room music, Sonos and Apple HomePod sync perfectly; Echo and Nest have occasional lag
