About Robot Vacuum Brands

Roborock has overtaken iRobot as the brand to beat. The S8 MaxV Ultra vacuums, mops with hot water, washes its own pads, and empties its dustbin — all without intervention. It costs $1,800 but does what used to require three separate devices. iRobot Roomba still makes the most durable vacuums — the j9+ handles pet hair better than anything else — but their mopping (Braava) is a separate device and the Combo models underperform Roborock on hard floors. Ecovacs Deebot competes directly with Roborock at $200–$400 less, though app reliability and mapping accuracy trail behind. Dreame emerged as a strong mid-range option; the L20 Ultra matches Roborock features at a lower price but after-sales support is weaker in North America. Shark makes budget-friendly robot vacuums ($200–$400) that clean carpet well but lack the mopping and self-maintenance of premium brands.

Buying Tips

  • LiDAR navigation (Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs) maps rooms faster and more accurately than camera-based systems
  • Self-emptying bases add $200–$300 but mean you only touch the dustbin once a month
  • If you have mostly hard floors, a vacuum-mop combo (Roborock, Ecovacs) replaces a traditional mop
  • Pet owners should prioritize rubber brush extractors (iRobot) over bristle brushes that tangle with hair
