About Security Camera Brands

Ring locks you into a $4/month per camera subscription for video history (or $13/month for all cameras). Without it, you get live view only. But Ring's ecosystem is unmatched — cameras, doorbells, alarm, and floodlights all work together in one app. Arlo makes the best battery-powered outdoor cameras; the Pro 5S shoots 2K, has a built-in spotlight, and lasts 4–6 months per charge. Wyze is the price disruptor — the Cam v4 costs $36 and shoots 2.5K with color night vision, though their $2/month Cam Plus subscription is basically required to make motion alerts usable. Reolink is the pick for local storage enthusiasts — their PoE cameras work with NVRs, support microSD cards, and do not require any subscription. Amcrest competes with Reolink in the prosumer space with RTSP streaming and NAS compatibility.

Buying Tips

  • Factor in subscription costs: Ring ($4–$13/mo), Arlo ($8–$18/mo), Wyze ($2/mo), Reolink (free)
  • Battery cameras are easy to mount but need recharging every 2–6 months depending on activity
  • PoE wired cameras (Reolink, Amcrest) never need charging and handle any weather but require ethernet runs
  • Wyze at $36 per camera is unbeatable on value, but the app pushes upsells aggressively
