About Smart Thermostat Brands
Three brands own this category. Ecobee stands out with included room sensors — the Premium model ships with one, and you can add more ($80 each) to balance temperatures across rooms with different sun exposure. Google Nest Learning Thermostat adjusts automatically based on your schedule patterns; after two weeks it stops needing manual input. The Nest Thermostat (non-learning) is the budget pick at $130 but drops the metal build and some sensors. Honeywell Home T9 includes a room sensor and has the widest HVAC compatibility of any smart thermostat — it works with systems that trip up Nest and Ecobee. All three brands require a C-wire or adapter for reliable power. Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit in the box; Nest relies on battery pulse charging that sometimes fails with older furnaces.
Buying Tips
- If your home has hot/cold spots, Ecobee with room sensors is the strongest option
- Nest Learning is the least hands-on — it builds your schedule from your behavior
- Check your wiring before buying: pull off your current thermostat and count the wires
- Honeywell T9 works with the widest range of HVAC systems, including older two-wire setups
