Overview
Many older LiftMaster openers predate built-in myQ, but the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Hub can add remote control. This guide walks through compatibility checks, hub placement, wiring or wireless learn, and setup in the myQ app.
What's Included
- Existing LiftMaster opener older than 10 years
- Photo eyes installed and working
- Home WiFi reaches garage area
- Outlet available near opener
- Existing wall button mounts at door
- Smartphone with myQ app installed
Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- Opener model too old to support myQ
- Hub mounted too far from opener
- WiFi signal weak inside garage
- Photo eye misalignment prevents testing
- Pairing mode timeout during learn
- Installer skipped required door sensor
Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
Do not disable the door sensor. Remote close without a sensor is unsafe and can damage vehicles, pets, or people in the door path.

Installation Steps
Verify Opener Compatibility
Look up the LiftMaster model number on the myQ compatibility page. Older openers need a hub because they lack built-in smart features. Very old openers without learn buttons are not compatible. Confirm yours has a learn button before beginning install.
Mount Hub Near Opener
Place the myQ Smart Garage Hub within 15 feet of the opener and pointing toward your home. Plug into a working outlet. Garage WiFi signal is critical. Consider adding a mesh node or extender if smartphone WiFi reads under two bars near the opener.

Install the included door sensor to the inside of the garage door using the provided adhesive. The sensor reports open or closed status. Without a working sensor, the myQ app cannot safely close the door remotely and will block remote close commands.
Pair Hub to Opener
Press and hold the learn button on the LiftMaster opener. While the opener is in learn mode, press the pairing button on the hub. Success is indicated when the garage door briefly clicks or the hub LED changes. If it does not, repeat with fresh timing.
Setup in myQ App
Open the myQ app, add a device, and follow the prompts to connect to your 2.4GHz WiFi. Name the door, review sensor status, and test remote open and close. Confirm you receive notifications when the door changes state during normal use.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Label the hub plug with a sharpie after install. Guest electricians or contractors sometimes unplug non-obvious devices during work.
