Overview
Many older LiftMaster openers predate built-in myQ, but the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Hub can add remote control. This guide walks through compatibility checks, hub placement, wiring or wireless learn, and setup in the myQ app.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Many older LiftMaster openers predate built-in myQ, but because LiftMaster and Chamberlain are the same company (LiftMaster is the pro line), the myQ Smart Garage Hub can add remote control to a lot of them — the key is confirming your specific model's compatibility and how it "learns" a new control. Newer Security+ 2.0 LiftMasters have a yellow-antenna learn button and pair the hub wirelessly; some older units are added by wiring the hub to the opener's door-control terminals.
Once you know the method, mount the hub near the opener so the link is dependable, and mount the door sensor on the top door section oriented vertical when the door is closed, then pair it — myQ relies on that sensor for door status and for remote closing. Link the hub to the opener using the correct wireless or wired learn procedure, then connect the hub to your 2.4GHz WiFi in the myQ app (2.4GHz-only), adding a mesh node if the garage signal is weak. Verify the hub actually opens and closes the LiftMaster before you finish. A compatibility check, the right learn method, a placed-and-paired sensor, and solid 2.4GHz WiFi bring an older LiftMaster into the myQ app.
What's Included
- Adding myQ to an older LiftMaster
- Compatibility questions
- Hub placement
- Wiring vs wireless learn
- Door sensor setup
- myQ app configuration
- Hub won't control the LiftMaster
- Unsure of the opener's learn method
Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- Older LiftMaster predates built-in myQ (needs compatibility check)
- Wrong learn method for the opener's generation
- Hub placed too far from the opener
- Hub not linked to the opener
- Door sensor mounted/paired incorrectly
- Not joining a 2.4GHz network
- Weak 2.4GHz signal at the hub
- Security+ 2.0 vs older method confusion
Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
Do not disable the door sensor. Remote close without a sensor is unsafe and can damage vehicles, pets, or people in the door path.

Installation Steps
Verify Opener Compatibility
Look up the LiftMaster model number on the myQ compatibility page. Older openers need a hub because they lack built-in smart features. Very old openers without learn buttons are not compatible. Confirm yours has a learn button before beginning install.
Mount Hub Near Opener
Place the myQ Smart Garage Hub within 15 feet of the opener and pointing toward your home. Plug into a working outlet. Garage WiFi signal is critical. Consider adding a mesh node or extender if smartphone WiFi reads under two bars near the opener.

$69.90Attach Door Sensor
Install the included door sensor to the inside of the garage door using the provided adhesive. The sensor reports open or closed status. Without a working sensor, the myQ app cannot safely close the door remotely and will block remote close commands.
Pair Hub to Opener
Press and hold the learn button on the LiftMaster opener. While the opener is in learn mode, press the pairing button on the hub. Success is indicated when the garage door briefly clicks or the hub LED changes. If it does not, repeat with fresh timing.
Setup in myQ App
Open the myQ app, add a device, and follow the prompts to connect to your 2.4GHz WiFi. Name the door, review sensor status, and test remote open and close. Confirm you receive notifications when the door changes state during normal use.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Label the hub plug with a sharpie after install. Guest electricians or contractors sometimes unplug non-obvious devices during work.
