Problem Description

You bought a Night Owl DVR secondhand, inherited one from a prior home, or simply forgot the admin password, and the login screen blocks every attempt. Night Owl offers two legitimate recovery paths: email-based Forgot Password recovery from the right-click menu if a Night Owl account was attached, or a pinhole hardware reset that wipes the admin credential while preserving recorded video.

Symptoms

  • Admin login rejected with Invalid Password error
  • Locked out after five failed attempts
  • Forgot Password button greyed out on login
  • No Night Owl account linked to the DVR
  • Previous owner never transferred device
  • Admin email address unreachable or abandoned

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • No Night Owl account was ever linked to DVR
  • Registered email account is no longer accessible
  • Previous owner did not unlink device on resale
  • Reset pinhole covered or not documented
  • Firmware update wiped the account linkage
  • Password was changed then forgotten same day

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not guess passwords more than four times. After five wrong attempts the DVR enters a lockout timer that can last 30 minutes and delays the reset process.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Try the Forgot Password Email Flow

At the login prompt click Forgot Password (lower right of the dialog). If a Night Owl account was linked during original setup, the DVR will send a secure reset code to that email. Enter the code and set a new admin password. If the Forgot Password button is missing or the screen says No Account Linked, skip to the hardware reset step.

2

Locate the Hardware Reset Pinhole

Power the DVR on and let it boot to the login screen. On the rear or side of the DVR chassis find a small hole labeled RESET (about the size of a SIM tray pin). Straighten a paperclip and insert it fully. You will feel a click when you hit the internal button. Keep firm pressure for exactly 10 seconds while the DVR is powered on.

3

Release and Wait for Reboot

After 10 seconds release the paperclip. The DVR beeps once and reboots on its own. The admin password resets to the factory default (often 000000 or blank) and the setup wizard launches when it returns to the login screen. Existing recordings on the internal HDD are preserved; only the admin credential and network settings are wiped.

4

Run Through First-Time Setup

Set a new admin password of at least 8 characters with a letter and a number. Create or sign in with a Night Owl account and link the DVR so Forgot Password will work next time. Rejoin the DVR to your Wi-Fi or confirm the ethernet lease. Set the time zone, enable NTP, and set a regional video standard (NTSC in the US).

5

Contact Night Owl Support if Reset Fails

On older Pro series DVRs the pinhole is sometimes absent. Call Night Owl Technical Support at 1-866-390-1303 with proof of purchase (Costco receipt, Home Depot receipt, or original order email). Support can issue a one-time super-password tied to the serial number printed on the bottom sticker, which unlocks the DVR without losing video.

Quick Solutions

Use Forgot Password to email a reset code
Press hardware reset pin for 10 seconds
Contact Night Owl support with proof of purchase
Create a Night Owl account then request code
Record video before any reset just in case
Update firmware after reset to latest version

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Record any critical footage to a USB drive before you reset. Open Main Menu, Backup, select the clips, and export to a FAT32 USB stick via the front or rear USB port.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
