Installation Steps
Install the App and Create an Account
On your phone open the App Store or Google Play and search Night Owl Protect. Install. Open the app and tap Create Account on the welcome screen. Enter your email address and a strong 12+ character password with letters, numbers, and symbols. Check your inbox for a 6-digit verification code and enter it in the app. Creating an account is optional but required for Forgot Password recovery on DVRs.
Add Your First Device by QR Code
Back on the home screen tap the plus icon at top right and choose the device type: DVR/NVR, Wire-Free Camera, or Doorbell. The app launches the camera to scan a QR code. For a DVR, scan the QR code on top of the recorder chassis. For wire-free cameras, scan the sticker under the battery door. For a doorbell, scan the back of the doorbell. The app auto-detects the P2P ID.
Connect the Device to Your Wi-Fi
The app prompts you to enter Wi-Fi credentials. Choose your 2.4GHz SSID (not 5GHz — no Night Owl wireless device supports 5GHz) and enter the password exactly. For a wired DVR skip to setting admin password. Wait for the voice prompt Device Connected on wire-free cameras and the doorbell. For the DVR wait for the Online green dot in the app, typically within 60 seconds.
Set a Strong Admin Password and Link Account
The app prompts for a new admin password to replace the factory default. Use at least 8 characters with one letter and one number. On DVRs the app asks to link the device to your Night Owl account — say Yes, this enables Forgot Password recovery later without a pinhole reset. Confirm your email once more. Your recorder now lives under your account and appears any time you sign in on a new phone.
Enable Notifications and Test Live View
Tap the camera in the device list. Open Device Settings, then Notifications. Toggle on Motion Detection, Human Detection if supported, and Doorbell Press. Save. Go back to the live view and verify the image loads within 5 seconds. Walk past the camera to generate a motion event. A push notification should hit your phone within 10 seconds, and the clip should appear in Events. Setup is complete.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Always link your recorder to a Night Owl account during setup. Skipping this step means a pinhole hardware reset is your only future password recovery option.
