- WiFi network name or password was changed
- Router was rebooted or replaced
- Camera is too far from the WiFi router
Problem Description
Your SimpliSafe camera shows offline or disconnected in the app and you cannot view the live feed or recordings. Unlike sensors that communicate via RF, SimpliSafe cameras connect directly to your WiFi network. When the camera loses WiFi connectivity it goes offline. Common causes include WiFi password changes, router reboots, weak WiFi signal, camera firmware issues, or the camera moving too far from the router. The camera must be reconnected to WiFi through the SimpliSafe app which requires being physically present with the camera.
Symptoms
- App shows camera offline or disconnected
- Cannot view live feed from the camera
- Camera shows offline but was working before router restart
- Camera disconnected after changing WiFi password
- Camera works intermittently going offline randomly
- Outdoor camera shows offline after battery recharge
- Video doorbell not connecting after initial setup
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- WiFi network name or password was changed
- Router was rebooted or replaced
- Camera is too far from the WiFi router
- Camera battery was removed and recharged
- WiFi network uses 5GHz only without 2.4GHz support
- Weak WiFi signal at camera location
- Camera firmware update failed
- Router assigned a new IP address to the camera
- ISP changed internet service or modem
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Outdoor cameras that go offline after battery replacement must be fully re-setup. Removing the battery clears the WiFi credentials. Always keep outdoor camera batteries charged above 20 percent to avoid unexpected offline events during cold weather when battery performance decreases.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Power Cycle the Camera
For indoor cameras unplug the power cable wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. For battery powered outdoor cameras remove the camera from its mount and press the sync button for 10 seconds then remount it. For the video doorbell press and hold the button on the front for 15 seconds. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the camera to fully restart and attempt to reconnect to WiFi automatically.
Reconnect Camera to WiFi
If the camera does not automatically reconnect you need to manually update WiFi settings. Open the SimpliSafe app and go to My System then Cameras. Select the offline camera and tap WiFi Settings. Follow the prompts to connect the camera to your WiFi network. You will need to be near the camera as the app uses Bluetooth to communicate with it during setup. Enter your current WiFi password when prompted.
Check WiFi Signal Strength
SimpliSafe cameras need a strong WiFi signal to maintain connection. Check signal strength by standing at the camera location with your phone connected to the same WiFi network. If you have only 1 or 2 bars the camera will struggle to stay connected. Consider moving the camera closer to the router, relocating the router, or installing a WiFi extender within 20 feet of the camera.
Factory Reset and Reinstall
If reconnecting does not work perform a factory reset. First remove the camera from the app by going to My System then Cameras then select the camera and tap Remove Device. Then reset the camera hardware. For SimpliCam and indoor cameras hold the reset button on the back for 15 seconds. For outdoor cameras hold the sync button for 20 seconds. Reinstall the camera through the app by selecting Add Device then Camera.
Verify Router Settings
SimpliSafe cameras require 2.4GHz WiFi. If your router only broadcasts 5GHz or uses band steering that forces devices to 5GHz the camera will not connect. Log into your router and ensure a 2.4GHz network is available. Some routers combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz under one name. Create a separate 2.4GHz only network for SimpliSafe cameras. Use WPA2 security as cameras may not support WPA3.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.
After reconnecting a camera it may take several minutes for the live feed to become available. The camera needs to sync with SimpliSafe servers and download any pending firmware updates. If the camera keeps disconnecting at the same time each day check if your router has scheduled reboots or power saving modes enabled. **Product Intelligence:** - Requires Base Station with WiFi/cellular - 2 Mbps upload per camera - Privacy shutter mechanical—check debris
Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.
