- Weak WiFi signal at camera location
- Power supply interrupted or adapter failing
- Motion sensitivity set too low or too high

Problem Description
Your SimpliSafe camera is not recording video clips or won't show a live stream. Check the camera WiFi connection first — SimpliSafe cameras connect to your home WiFi independently from the base station. If the camera LED shows red or is off, it has lost WiFi. Also verify your SimpliSafe subscription — video recording requires an Interactive Monitoring plan.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
When a SimpliCam or SimpliSafe outdoor camera stops working entirely, first check whether the issue is the live feed, recorded clips, or both. If you can see live video but recordings are missing, your monitoring plan may have lapsed — camera recording requires the Interactive plan at minimum. If the camera shows a black screen with the status light on, the camera firmware may be corrupted after a failed OTA update. Power cycle by unplugging for 30 seconds. If the status LED is not lit at all, check the USB power cable and adapter — the SimpliCam uses a micro-USB connector that wears out over time, especially if the cable gets tugged. Try a different 5V 1A USB adapter before assuming the camera is dead.
Symptoms
- Camera shows offline in the app
- Live view fails to load or times out
- Motion detection not triggering alerts
- Night vision appears too dark or washed out
- Recorded clips are missing or corrupted
- Two-way audio not working
- Camera keeps disconnecting from WiFi
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Weak WiFi signal at camera location
- Power supply interrupted or adapter failing
- Motion sensitivity set too low or too high
- Cloud storage subscription expired
- Camera firmware outdated
- Infrared sensors blocked or dirty
- Bandwidth insufficient for multiple cameras
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Camera works for local viewing in-app even without monitoring plan.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check the camera WiFi connection
SimpliSafe cameras (SimpliCam, Outdoor Camera) connect to your home WiFi independently from the base station — they do not go through the base station. In the SimpliSafe app, tap the camera and check if it shows Online or Offline. If offline, the camera lost its WiFi connection. Check your router — is your WiFi network up? SimpliSafe cameras support 2.4GHz WiFi only. If you recently changed your WiFi password or router, the camera needs to be reconnected through the app.
Power cycle the camera
For the SimpliCam (indoor), unplug the USB power cable from the camera, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. The camera takes about 30 seconds to boot — the LED ring lights up and cycles through colors. For the Outdoor Camera, it is battery and solar powered — press and hold the sync button on the back for 10 seconds to force a restart. After the restart, check the app to see if the camera comes back online. If the SimpliCam LED shows solid red, it cannot connect to WiFi.

$9.99Check the camera subscription for live view and recording
SimpliSafe cameras require an active monitoring plan for cloud recording and 24/7 live view. With the Interactive plan ($27.99/month), you get cloud recording, motion alerts, and unlimited live view. Without a plan, the camera has limited features — you may get basic motion alerts but no saved video. If your plan expired or was downgraded, camera features stop working even though the camera itself is powered on and connected.
Fix poor video quality or buffering
If the camera is online but the video feed is blurry, freezing, or buffering, the WiFi signal at the camera location is too weak. In the SimpliSafe app, check the camera WiFi signal indicator. Move the camera closer to your router or add a WiFi extender. SimpliSafe cameras stream at up to 1080p, which needs at least 2 Mbps upload bandwidth per camera. If you have multiple cameras and a slow upload speed, they compete for bandwidth — stagger recording or lower the video quality in camera settings if available.
Reconnect the camera to WiFi
If the camera will not reconnect after a power cycle, you may need to re-run the WiFi setup. In the SimpliSafe app, go to the camera settings and tap WiFi Setup or Reconnect. The app guides you through the process: the camera enters pairing mode (the LED blinks blue), you select your 2.4GHz WiFi network, and enter the password. If the camera does not enter pairing mode, press and hold the sync button on the camera for 15-20 seconds until the LED starts blinking. After connecting, test live view to confirm the feed works.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.
SimpliSafe cameras require the Interactive plan ($27.99/mo) for full functionality. **Product Intelligence:** - Requires Base Station with WiFi/cellular - 2 Mbps upload per camera - Privacy shutter mechanical—check debris
Live view problems that start suddenly usually trace back to an upload speed drop — the camera itself is fine, the bandwidth path to the cloud isn't.
- Weak WiFi signal at camera location
- Power supply interrupted or adapter failing
- Motion sensitivity set too low or too high
- Cloud storage subscription expired
- Camera firmware outdated
