Problem Description

Your SimpliSafe Indoor Camera is not recording video clips. Recording requires an active Interactive Monitoring plan — the Standard plan does not include camera recording. Check your plan in the SimpliSafe app under Account > My Plan. Even with the right plan, recording must be enabled in the camera settings. This guide covers plan verification and recording configuration.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

SimpliSafe camera recording is a paid feature — without an active plan (Fast Protect), the camera shows live view but saves no clips, which is the number-one reason "it's not recording." Camera Shield/privacy mode and a closed shutter also stop recording by design.

Start by confirming your plan includes recording and that motion recording is enabled (and privacy/shield off), then check the camera is online with enough signal to upload. If live view works but nothing saves, it's almost always the subscription or a privacy setting rather than the camera.

Symptoms

  • No video clips recorded
  • Live view works, no recordings
  • Motion not saving
  • Camera shield/privacy on
  • Recordings missing
  • No clips in the timeline
  • Plan expired
  • Records only sometimes

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • No active recording plan (Fast Protect)
  • Motion recording disabled or shielded (privacy)
  • Weak WiFi preventing upload
  • Camera offline
  • Motion zones/sensitivity too limited
  • Privacy shutter closed
  • Firmware out of date
  • Clip/recording settings off

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check your SimpliSafe subscription plan

Camera recording requires the Fast Protect plan ($29.99/month). Without it, the camera shows live view only — no recorded clips. In the SimpliSafe app, go to Account, then Subscription. If you are on the Standard or Self-Monitoring plan, cameras do not record. Upgrade to Fast Protect to enable cloud recording with 30-day storage.

2

Verify the camera is online

In the SimpliSafe app, check the camera status. If it shows offline, the camera cannot record. Common causes: the camera is unplugged, WiFi is down, or the camera has been moved out of WiFi range. Verify the power cable is connected and the WiFi indicator shows a connected status. Restart the camera by unplugging it for 10 seconds.

3

Check motion detection settings

The camera only records when it detects motion (or when triggered by an alarm event). If motion detection is disabled or sensitivity is very low, the camera does not trigger recordings. In camera settings, verify motion detection is enabled and sensitivity is set to medium or higher. Also check activity zones — if no zones are active, detection may be off.

4

Check if the privacy shutter is open

If the physical privacy shutter on the camera is closed, the camera cannot see or record anything. Check the camera body — the shutter should be slid fully open. The app also shows a blocked message when the shutter is closed. This is the most commonly overlooked reason for missing recordings.

5

Check WiFi bandwidth

Recording requires the camera to upload clips to the SimpliSafe cloud. If your WiFi is slow or the camera signal is weak, recordings may fail to upload. In the app, check the camera WiFi signal strength. If it is poor, move the camera closer to the router or add a WiFi extender. The camera needs at least 2 Mbps upload bandwidth for reliable recording.

Quick Solutions

Subscribe to the recording plan (Fast Protect)
Enable motion recording; turn off camera shield
Improve the WiFi signal to upload clips
Confirm the camera is online
Widen motion zones and sensitivity
Open the privacy shutter
Update firmware
Check recording/clip settings

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

Live view problems that start suddenly usually trace back to an upload speed drop — the camera itself is fine, the bandwidth path to the cloud isn't.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • No active recording plan (Fast Protect)
  • Motion recording disabled or shielded (privacy)
  • Weak WiFi preventing upload
  • Camera offline
  • Motion zones/sensitivity too limited
