Problem Description

Your Roomba sits on the Home Base but will not charge. The battery indicator flashes amber instead of steady charging. The Roomba may have worked fine previously but now the battery drains completely and the robot will not start. This is typically caused by dirty charging contacts oxidized connectors or a degraded battery that needs replacement.

Symptoms

  • Battery light flashes amber when placed on dock
  • Roomba sits on Home Base but battery stays at zero
  • Robot starts then immediately returns to dock and dies
  • Charging indicator shows error pattern of rapid blinks
  • Battery percentage does not increase after hours on dock
  • Robot worked yesterday but will not charge today

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Dirty or oxidized charging contacts on Roomba bottom
  • Dirty or corroded charging contacts on Home Base
  • Home Base not plugged in or power adapter loose
  • Battery degraded after 300 plus charge cycles
  • Roomba not properly aligned on dock charging pads
  • Dust and debris buildup under Roomba blocking contacts

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never use steel wool or abrasive pads to clean Roomba charging contacts. Scratching the metal surface creates uneven contact points that make charging problems worse over time.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Clean Roomba Charging Contacts

Flip your Roomba over and locate the two metal charging contacts on the bottom near the front. Use a clean cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to wipe both contacts thoroughly. Dust dirt and oxidation build up over time creating a barrier that prevents electrical contact. This is the fix in over 50 percent of Roomba charging failures.

Clean Home Base Charging Pads

The Home Base has two metal strips on the top surface where the Roomba makes contact. Unplug the Home Base first then wipe both metal strips with a dry microfiber cloth. If they appear tarnished use a cloth with rubbing alcohol. Also check that the power adapter is firmly plugged into the back of the Home Base and the wall outlet.

3

Reboot the Roomba

Press and hold the Clean button on top of the Roomba for 20 seconds until the light ring goes dark. Release and wait 30 seconds. Press Clean once to turn it back on. This resets the charging circuitry. Place the Roomba back on the Home Base and watch for the charging indicator to show pulsing white or steady amber.

4

Test with Direct Placement

Manually place the Roomba on the Home Base ensuring it is centered and the front contacts are directly touching the base charging strips. If it charges when manually placed but not when auto-docking the dock sensors or Roomba IR receiver may need cleaning. Gently push the Roomba forward and back while on the dock to ensure solid contact.

5

Check Battery Health

If the Roomba is over 18 to 24 months old the lithium-ion battery may be degraded. In the iRobot app check battery health under robot settings. A battery that drains from 100 to zero within minutes needs replacement. Use only official iRobot batteries as third-party ones frequently cause charging issues and may void warranty.

Quick Solutions

Clean Roomba charging contacts with rubbing alcohol
Clean Home Base charging strips with dry cloth
Verify Home Base power adapter is firmly plugged in
Reboot Roomba by holding Clean button 20 seconds
Replace battery if robot is over 2 years old
Reseat Roomba on dock ensuring contacts align properly

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

Run your Roomba at least once every 2 weeks even if you do not need to vacuum. Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster when left fully discharged for extended periods.

Real-World Insight

App battery indicators run 15–20% behind actual charge levels — by the time the low warning appears, the device has been struggling for days.
