- Weak WiFi signal preventing download
- Battery too low to complete update
- Update interrupted by power loss
Problem Description
You want to update your Ring doorbell or camera firmware to get the latest features, bug fixes, and security patches. Ring firmware updates are automatic but sometimes need troubleshooting. This covers Ring Video Doorbells, Stick Up Cams, Floodlight Cams, Indoor Cams, and Ring Alarm devices.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The biggest frustration with Ring firmware updates is that you cannot trigger them manually. Ring controls the rollout completely. If someone is having issues that a firmware update fixes, the fastest path is to call Ring support and ask them to push the update — they can do this for individual devices. The other common issue is weak WiFi — Ring devices with RSSI worse than -65 often fail mid-update and keep retrying. Moving the router closer or adding a Ring Chime Pro as a WiFi extender fixes it.
Symptoms
- Ring app showing update available notification
- New features not appearing on your device
- Device behaving erratically after update notice
- Want to check current firmware version
- Update stuck at certain percentage
- Device offline after attempted update
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Weak WiFi signal preventing download
- Battery too low to complete update
- Update interrupted by power loss
- Device not staying online long enough
- Ring servers busy during peak times
- Insufficient storage for update file
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Never remove the battery or cut power to a Ring device while a firmware update is actively installing. The device LED will flash or the status light will show activity during the install phase. Interrupting this can corrupt the firmware and brick the device, requiring a warranty replacement. If you are unsure whether an update is in progress, wait at least 30 minutes before power cycling.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check your current firmware version
Open the Ring app, tap the three lines menu, go to Devices, select the camera, then tap Device Health. Scroll down to Firmware. Note the version number. Ring does not let you manually trigger updates — they push them automatically. But knowing your current version helps you confirm whether an update has actually been applied.
Make sure the device has strong WiFi and full power
Firmware updates will not start if the battery is below 50 percent or if the WiFi signal is weak. Check the RSSI value in Device Health — if it is worse than -60, the signal is too weak for reliable updates. For battery devices, charge to 100 percent and leave it on the charger during the update. For wired devices, check that the transformer is providing adequate power.
Leave the device online overnight
Ring pushes firmware updates during off-peak hours, usually between midnight and 6 AM. If the camera has a pending update, just leave it powered on and connected to WiFi overnight. Do not reboot the device, your router, or change any settings. Check the firmware version the next morning.
Reboot the device if the update seems stuck
If the firmware version has not changed after 48 hours: for battery devices, remove the battery for 10 seconds and reinsert. For wired doorbells, press and hold the orange button on the back for 20 seconds. For cameras, unplug for 10 seconds. After reboot, the device will check in with Ring servers and may begin the update.
Reboot your router if the device keeps going offline during updates
If the device goes offline repeatedly or the update appears to start but never finishes, your router may be dropping the connection during the large download. Reboot the router, wait for it to fully come back, then let the Ring device reconnect. Avoid using the device (checking live view, etc.) during the update period.
Contact Ring support for stuck or failed updates
If the firmware has not updated after multiple nights with good power and WiFi, the update may be stuck server-side. Contact Ring support through the app (Help > Contact Us) or call 1-800-656-1918. They can force-push the update to your specific device or check if the camera model is not yet included in the rollout.
Quick Solutions
Update pending
- Leave the device online and powered.
- Firmware updates usually install automatically.
Low battery
- Recharge the battery fully.
- Retry after charging.
Weak Wi-Fi
- Improve signal strength.
- Move the router closer or use an extender.
Update failed
- Reboot the device and router.
- Check Device Health again after it reconnects.
App outdated
- Update the Ring app and reopen it.
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the device became unresponsive after a firmware update, a factory reset usually clears the corrupted state — the update itself is rarely the root cause.
Ring rolls out firmware in waves — not every device gets the update at the same time. If your neighbor has a newer firmware version than you, that is normal. Ring prioritizes devices by model, region, and account. There is no way to force or speed up the rollout. If you need a specific fix that is in a newer firmware, contact Ring support and ask them to push it to your device.
Firmware updates that wipe settings are more common than brands admit — many devices silently reset to factory defaults on an OTA push with no warning.
