Problem Description

Your Ring Floodlight Cam Pro PoE version will not power on or shows no lights after connecting the ethernet cable. The camera requires Power over Ethernet but is not receiving power from your switch or injector. This is frustrating because you ran ethernet specifically for this camera.

Symptoms

  • Camera shows no lights at all when ethernet connected
  • Camera powers on briefly then shuts off
  • PoE switch shows no power draw on camera port
  • Camera works with test PoE injector but not main switch
  • Floodlights do not turn on but camera indicator blinks
  • Setup in Ring app fails because camera not detected on network

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • PoE switch does not support 802.3at PoE+ standard required
  • Ethernet cable too long or using Cat5 instead of Cat5e/Cat6
  • PoE budget on switch exceeded with too many devices
  • Ethernet cable damaged or terminated incorrectly
  • Camera defective and not drawing power properly
  • Using passive PoE injector instead of active 802.3at

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never connect the PoE version to a standard household electrical junction box. It is powered only through ethernet and has no AC power input.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify PoE+ 802.3at Support

The Ring Floodlight Cam Pro PoE requires 802.3at PoE+ which delivers up to 30 watts. Basic 802.3af PoE only delivers 15.4 watts which is not enough. Check your switch specifications. If it says PoE but not PoE+ it will not power this camera. You need to upgrade to a PoE+ switch or use an 802.3at injector.

Check Your Ethernet Cable

Use Cat5e or Cat6 cable rated for PoE. Cat5 can work for short runs but often fails with PoE+. Maximum cable length is 100 meters or 328 feet. If your run is close to this limit voltage drop may prevent the camera from powering on. Test with a shorter cable to rule this out.

3

Calculate PoE Power Budget

Your PoE switch has a total power budget shared by all ports. An 8-port switch might have only 120W total. If you have multiple cameras each drawing 25-30W you can exceed the budget. Check your switch admin panel for power consumption per port. Disable ports you are not using to free up power.

4

Test With PoE Injector

Buy or borrow an 802.3at PoE+ injector rated for at least 30W. Connect it between your ethernet cable and a regular switch port. If the camera powers on with the injector but not your PoE switch then your switch is the problem. This test costs about $30 and saves hours of troubleshooting.

5

Inspect Ethernet Terminations

If you terminated the ethernet yourself check both ends. Use T568B wiring standard on both ends. Pins 1-2 carry data and power on one pair while pins 3-6 carry the other pair. A single crossed wire prevents PoE negotiation. Use an ethernet cable tester to verify all 8 wires connect correctly.

Quick Solutions

Verify switch supports 802.3at PoE+ with 30W per port
Replace ethernet cable with Cat6 under 100 meters
Check PoE power budget and disable unused ports
Re-terminate ethernet ends with proper T568B wiring
Test with known working PoE+ injector to isolate issue
Contact Ring support if camera is defective

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

The Ring Floodlight Cam Pro PoE requires 802.3at PoE+ specifically. Many budget PoE switches only support 802.3af which will not work.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • PoE switch does not support 802.3at PoE+ standard required
  • Ethernet cable too long or using Cat5 instead of
  • PoE budget on switch exceeded with too many devices
  • Ethernet cable damaged or terminated incorrectly
  • Camera defective and not drawing power properly
