- Retention set longer than the disk can hold
- High bitrate/resolution filling fast
- Continuous (24/7) recording
Problem Description
Your UniFi Protect NVR storage is full even though retention is configured — the system shows storage warnings and old recordings are not being cleaned up as expected. Per-camera retention, high bitrate settings, continuous recording on all cameras, disk health issues, or insufficient total storage capacity for the number of cameras can all cause storage to fill faster than retention can clear it.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A UniFi Protect NVR filling up despite retention settings usually means the retention target exceeds what the disk can physically hold — retention is best-effort within capacity, so if your cameras generate more footage than the drive can store for the set period, it fills and starts overwriting the oldest regardless. High bitrate, high resolution, and 24/7 continuous recording eat space fast.
The fix is matching your recording demands to your storage: shorten the retention period, lower bitrate or resolution on space-hungry cameras, or switch some from continuous to detection-only recording. If you genuinely need long retention across many high-res cameras, add or upgrade the drive. Retention can't exceed the disk — so it's a balance of capacity, quality, and how long you keep footage.
Symptoms
- Storage full despite retention set
- NVR full even with retention
- Retention set but storage maxed
- Disk full unexpectedly
- Storage fills before retention window
- Full despite short retention
- Recording stops from full storage
- Retention not freeing space
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Retention set longer than the disk can hold
- High bitrate/resolution filling fast
- Continuous (24/7) recording
- Many high-res cameras
- Retention is best-effort within capacity
- Detection retention accumulating
- Disk smaller than the workload
- Overwrite/cleanup not keeping up
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not apply one retention profile to all cameras without risk-based tuning.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check the actual retention settings for each camera
In Protect: go to Settings > Recording > Retention Settings. Each camera can have individual retention. If one camera is set to 'Keep Forever' or a very long retention: it consumes disproportionate storage. Check all cameras — the total storage used depends on the combined retention across all cameras multiplied by their bitrate. For a 2TB drive with 10 cameras at 6 Mbps each: you get about 3 days of continuous recording. Reduce retention to match your available storage: 3-7 days for most residential setups.
Reduce camera bitrate and resolution
Storage consumption is directly proportional to bitrate. A camera at 8 Mbps uses 4x more storage than one at 2 Mbps. In Protect: Devices > each camera > Recording Quality. For cameras that do not need 4K: drop to 1080p. For 1080p cameras: reduce bitrate from 6 Mbps to 3-4 Mbps (still good quality for security footage). These changes immediately reduce the rate of storage consumption. Existing recordings at the old settings age out according to retention policy.
Switch low-priority cameras to motion-only recording
Continuous recording uses the most storage. For cameras monitoring low-activity areas (garage interior, side yard): switch to 'Detections Only' recording mode. In Protect: Devices > camera > Recording Mode > 'Detections Only.' This records only when motion is detected, reducing storage by 60-90% per camera compared to continuous recording. High-priority cameras (front door, driveway) should remain on 'Always' for gapless coverage.
Check for a disk health issue preventing cleanup
Protect automatically deletes the oldest recordings when storage is full. If the cleanup process fails: storage stays full even with short retention. In UniFi OS: Settings > System > check disk health. If the disk shows SMART warnings or errors: it may be failing and unable to delete old segments. Replace the drive before it fails completely. On the UDMP: check if the internal HDD or SSD is healthy. On the UNVR: check all drives in the RAID array.
Add more storage or upgrade the NVR
If retention is already short and bitrates are low: the storage is too small for the number of cameras. On the UDMP: the internal 2.5' bay supports up to 5TB. On the UNVR: up to 4 drives in RAID (20TB+ usable). On the CK-G2+: the internal 1TB drive is limiting for more than 5 cameras. Upgrade options: larger drive in the UDMP, add/upgrade drives in the UNVR, or add a NAS (UniFi Protect does not natively support NAS — the storage must be local to the NVR).
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Storage planning should match camera count, bitrate, and retention goals.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Retention set longer than the disk can hold
- High bitrate/resolution filling fast
- Continuous (24/7) recording
- Many high-res cameras
- Retention is best-effort within capacity
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
