Problem Description

Your Wyze camera connects to WiFi and shows as Online in the Wyze app but when you tap it to open the live view the screen is completely black. The camera status bar shows connected and there is no loading indicator but no video image appears. A black screen after successful connection is different from a connection failure or error code and is caused by the camera video stream not being routed correctly, a hardware night vision filter stuck in the closed position, or the camera lens physically obstructed.

Symptoms

  • Camera shows Online in Wyze app but live view is entirely black
  • Camera connects without error but video feed never appears
  • Black screen with no loading spinner after tapping the camera tile
  • Black screen occurs only at night but camera works during the day
  • Other cameras show video but specific camera shows black screen consistently
  • Live view was working then went black screen without any other changes

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Camera night vision filter physically stuck in closed position blocking lens
  • Camera placed in complete darkness with night vision set to Off
  • Camera lens cap or mounting obstruction covering the front of the lens
  • Camera IR cut filter hardware fault only visible in daylight or low light
  • Video stream codec negotiation failure showing blank frame on mobile
  • Corrupted microSD card interfering with camera video processing pipeline

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not shine a direct flashlight into the Wyze camera lens to test if the lens is obstructed. High-intensity light can saturate and permanently damage the CMOS image sensor in the camera.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Toggle Night Vision to Auto

Open the Wyze app and tap the camera showing the black screen. In the live view screen tap the moon icon or go to settings and look for Night Vision. Change the setting from Off to Auto. The camera will activate its infrared illuminators and the live view should show a greyscale image from the IR illumination. If an image appears in night vision but not in daylight mode the camera has a stuck IR cut filter. If the image stays black even in night vision mode with IR enabled the camera has a hardware fault with the image sensor.

2

Check for Physical Obstruction

Physically inspect the front of the Wyze camera lens. Confirm no lens cap, sticker, tape, or mounting surface is covering the camera lens opening. Cameras mounted in corners or behind objects can be physically positioned with the lens facing a wall or ceiling with no view of the room. Move the camera and point it at a clear open area and check the live view. Also check that the camera is not inside a sealed enclosure that blocks light entirely.

3

Power Cycle the Camera

Unplug the Wyze camera USB power cable for 30 seconds then reconnect it. The camera IR cut filter is a mechanical component that switches between day and night mode. In rare cases the filter gets stuck in the closed position after a power interruption. A clean power cycle forces the filter to complete its mechanical reset cycle during startup. After the camera reconnects and shows Online test the live view. If the image is now visible the filter was stuck and the power cycle resolved it.

4

Remove the microSD Card

If a microSD card is installed in the Wyze camera remove it and test the live view. A corrupted or failing microSD card can cause the camera to spend excessive processing time writing to the card which starves the video encoding pipeline of processing resources resulting in a black live view. With the card removed the camera uses only cloud streaming resources. If the live view works without the card reformat the card using the Wyze app format option before reinserting it.

5

Factory Reset the Camera

If the black screen persists after all above steps perform a factory reset. Hold the setup button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks yellow three times. After the reset re-add the camera in the Wyze app. A factory reset clears any corrupted video configuration state. If the camera still shows a black screen after factory reset and hardware checks are clear the image sensor has failed and the camera should be replaced under the Wyze warranty within its 1-year coverage period.

Quick Solutions

Toggle night vision setting in Wyze app from Off to Auto to activate IR
Remove any lens obstruction or confirm camera is not facing a wall
Power cycle the camera to reset the IR cut filter hardware position
Remove microSD card and test live view without local recording
Update camera firmware which includes video stream initialisation fixes
Perform a factory reset if black screen persists after all hardware checks

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

Enable the Wyze Cam thumbnail preview feature in the app so the camera tile shows a recent snapshot. If the thumbnail is black the camera has had no video for an extended period which is an early warning sign of a stuck filter or obstruction before you check the live view.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Camera night vision filter physically stuck in closed position
  • Camera placed in complete darkness with night vision set
  • Camera lens cap or mounting obstruction covering the front
  • Camera IR cut filter hardware fault only visible in
  • Video stream codec negotiation failure showing blank frame on
