Problem Description

Your Fibaro Home Center hub can't discover Z-Wave or Zigbee devices during pairing. The Home Center must be connected to your network via Ethernet (port on the back) and have a valid IP address. Devices must be in inclusion mode and within range. This guide covers checking the network connection, entering inclusion mode, and proximity requirements.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not factory reset your hub unless absolutely necessary as this removes all paired devices, automations, and settings. You will need to re-pair every single device from scratch which can take hours for a large setup. Always try a simple restart first.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the Home Center network connection

The Fibaro Home Center (HC2, HC3, HC Lite) connects to your local network via Ethernet. Check that the Ethernet cable is firmly plugged into the hub and your router. The LED on the Ethernet port should show activity (blinking). If the hub has no network connection: try a different Ethernet cable and a different router port. The hub needs a DHCP address from your router — check your router's connected devices list for the Fibaro hub.

Find the hub IP address

To access the Fibaro Home Center web interface, you need its IP address. Check your router's admin page for connected devices — look for 'fibaro' or 'HC' in the device list. Alternatively, use the Fibaro Finder tool (download from fibaro.com) on a computer on the same network. The tool scans the network and displays the hub's IP address. Open a browser and go to that IP to access the Home Center dashboard.

3

Fix device discovery not finding Z-Wave devices

If the Home Center does not discover new Z-Wave devices during inclusion: make sure the hub is in inclusion mode (Settings > Z-Wave > Include Device). The device must be within Z-Wave range — typically 30-100 feet indoors depending on walls. During inclusion, the device should be as close to the hub as possible. For battery-powered devices, press the wake-up button (usually triple-click the main button) to activate the device during inclusion.

4

Fix ghost devices in the Z-Wave network

Ghost devices (failed inclusions that left orphaned entries) can prevent new devices from joining. In the Home Center, go to Settings > Z-Wave > check for devices showing errors or unresponsive status. Remove ghost entries by selecting the device and clicking Remove/Exclude. After clearing ghosts, try including the new device again. Ghost devices can also slow down the entire Z-Wave mesh by causing unnecessary routing attempts.

5

Update the Home Center firmware

Firmware updates improve Z-Wave compatibility and fix discovery bugs. In the Home Center dashboard, go to Settings > General > Update. Check for available updates and install. The update process takes 10-20 minutes — do not power off the hub during the update. After updating, restart the hub and try device discovery again. Newer firmware versions support more Z-Wave device types and improve the inclusion success rate.

Quick Solutions

Verify hub has power and network connection
Restart hub by unplugging for 60 seconds
Add repeater devices to extend Zigbee or Z-Wave range
Re-pair offline devices after removing them
Review and fix broken automations
Update hub and device firmware

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Place your hub in a central location in your home, elevated off the floor and away from your WiFi router by at least 3 feet. This provides the best Zigbee and Z-Wave signal coverage to all corners of your house.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
