- Wrong HPM import URL used
- Code added as a driver instead of an app
- Import or save step skipped
Problem Description
You want to install Hubitat Package Manager (HPM), the community tool for installing and updating custom apps and drivers on your Hubitat. Setup means adding HPM as a custom app via its import URL, then using it to browse and install packages. Snags are the import URL, code not saving, and the initial Match Up step for existing custom code.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Hubitat Package Manager is itself a custom app you install by pasting its import URL into App Code, so most install trouble is using the wrong URL or adding it as a driver instead of an app. In real setups the Match Up step is skipped, so existing custom code is not managed.
Add HPM as App Code with the correct raw URL, run Match Up, and it will handle installs and updates from there.
Symptoms
- HPM will not install
- Import URL fails
- Code does not save as an app
- HPM installed but finds no packages
- Cannot update installed packages
- Match Up step fails
- Custom apps not appearing
- Repository list empty
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Wrong HPM import URL used
- Code added as a driver instead of an app
- Import or save step skipped
- Hub has no internet to fetch the repository
- Match Up not run for existing custom code
- HPM version outdated
- GitHub raw URL blocked
- App not enabled after install
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not factory reset your hub unless absolutely necessary as this removes all paired devices, automations, and settings. You will need to re-pair every single device from scratch which can take hours for a large setup. Always try a simple restart first.

Step-by-Step Solution
Install Hubitat Package Manager (HPM)
HPM is a community-built app that makes installing and updating third-party apps and drivers easy. To install it: go to the Hubitat web interface, open Apps Code, click New App, and paste the HPM installation code from the GitHub repository (search hubitatpackagemanager on GitHub). Save the code. Then go to Apps > Add User App > Hubitat Package Manager. The initial setup takes a few minutes as it downloads the package repository.
Browse and install packages
Open the HPM app from your Apps list. Select Install to browse available packages. You can filter by category: Integrations, Lighting, Security, Notifications, Dashboards, Drivers. Each listing shows the package name, author, description, and whether it requires an app, a driver, or both. Select a package and click Install — HPM automatically creates the app and driver code entries in your hub. After installation, go to Apps > Add User App to add the newly installed app.
Update installed packages
Open HPM and select Update. HPM checks all installed packages against the community repository for new versions. Packages with available updates show a flag. Select the packages you want to update and click Update. HPM replaces the app/driver code with the latest version. Always create a hub backup before updating multiple packages — rarely, a driver update can cause device compatibility issues.
Fix HPM not loading or showing errors
If HPM shows errors when opening or fails to download the package list: check your hub internet connection (HPM needs to reach GitHub). Go to Apps Code, find the HPM app code, and check for error messages in the code editor. If the code is corrupted, delete it and reinstall from the GitHub repository. If HPM loads but shows zero packages, the package manifest URL may have changed — check the Hubitat community forum for the latest HPM version and reinstall.
Remove packages installed through HPM
Open HPM and select Uninstall. Select the package you want to remove. HPM removes the app and driver code entries. However, if any devices or automations still use the removed driver or app, you will get an error — remove those device entries and automations first, then uninstall the package. After uninstalling, go to Apps and Devices to verify the entries are gone.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the hub reconnects then drops every few minutes, check for an IP conflict — two devices sharing the same DHCP address fight each other continuously.
Place your hub in a central location in your home, elevated off the floor and away from your WiFi router by at least 3 feet. This provides the best Zigbee and Z-Wave signal coverage to all corners of your house.
Hub disconnections that cycle repeatedly are almost always IP conflicts — two devices fighting over the same DHCP lease after a router restart.
