Problem Description

You want to get a new Nest WiFi Pro up and running — connecting the primary router to your modem, setting it up in the Google Home app, adding mesh points, and migrating your devices. Most setup snags come down to Bluetooth pairing, modem/ISP settings, or double-NAT with an existing router.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Nest WiFi Pro setup is quick when a few basics line up: the primary connects to your modem by Ethernet, Bluetooth is on for the initial pairing, and the Google Home app walks you through the QR scan and speed test. The snags are predictable — the app can't find the unit because Bluetooth is off or the phone's too far, or setup stalls because the modem needs a restart.

If you're keeping an old router, put it in bridge mode to avoid double NAT, and enter any PPPoE or MAC requirements your ISP needs during setup. Reuse your previous network name and password so most devices reconnect on their own — smart-home gear like locks and cameras may still need reconfiguring since they cache WiFi credentials.

Symptoms

  • App cannot find the Nest WiFi Pro
  • Setup stalls at the WiFi step
  • Unsure how to connect the primary router
  • Adding mesh points fails
  • Devices will not reconnect after setup
  • Double NAT with an existing router
  • ISP needs PPPoE or MAC settings
  • Smart-home devices dropped after switching

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth off during initial pairing
  • Phone too far from the device to pair
  • Modem needs a restart before setup
  • Existing router causing double NAT
  • ISP requiring PPPoE credentials or a set MAC
  • New network name forcing manual reconnects
  • Mesh point placed too far during add
  • Devices storing old WiFi credentials

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not factory reset your hub unless absolutely necessary as this removes all paired devices, automations, and settings. You will need to re-pair every single device from scratch which can take hours for a large setup. Always try a simple restart first.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Connect the primary router

Unbox the first Nest Wifi Pro unit and connect it to your modem or ONT (fiber box) using the included Ethernet cable. Plug in the power adapter. The LED on the bottom pulses white when it is ready for setup. If you have an existing router, you can either replace it with the Nest Wifi Pro or put your existing router in bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.

2

Set up in the Google Home app

Open the Google Home app on your phone, tap + to add a device, and select Nest Wifi. The app will find the Nest Wifi Pro automatically. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the device. Choose your WiFi network name and password. The app runs a speed test and configures the router. Setup takes about 3-5 minutes for the first unit.

3

Add additional mesh points

After the primary router is set up, the Google Home app prompts you to add additional mesh points. Power on the next Nest Wifi Pro unit in the location you have chosen. The app detects it and walks you through adding it to the mesh. Each additional point takes about 2-3 minutes to configure. The app tests the connection between the new point and the existing mesh to confirm good placement.

4

Fix setup failures

If the app cannot find the Nest Wifi Pro during setup, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone — the initial pairing uses Bluetooth. Move your phone within 5 feet of the device. If setup stalls at the WiFi connection step, restart your modem and try again. For ISPs that require PPPoE credentials or a specific MAC address, enter these in the advanced network settings during setup.

5

Migrate devices from your old network

After setup, the hubs need to connect to the new network. Use the same network name and password as your old router — most devices will reconnect automatically within a few minutes. If you chose a new network name, you will need to reconnect each device manually. Smart home devices (locks, cameras, thermostats) may need to be reconfigured in their respective apps since they often store WiFi credentials that do not update automatically.

Quick Solutions

Connect the primary to the modem/ONT by Ethernet
Enable Bluetooth and keep the phone within a few feet
Add via Google Home > + > Nest Wifi, scan the QR
Restart the modem if setup stalls
Put an existing router in bridge mode to avoid double NAT
Enter PPPoE/MAC in advanced settings if the ISP needs it
Reuse the old network name so devices auto-reconnect
Reconfigure smart-home devices on the new network

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

Place your hub in a central location in your home, elevated off the floor and away from your WiFi router by at least 3 feet. This provides the best Zigbee and Z-Wave signal coverage to all corners of your house.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Bluetooth off during initial pairing
  • Phone too far from the device to pair
  • Modem needs a restart before setup
  • Existing router causing double NAT
  • ISP requiring PPPoE credentials or a set MAC
