Problem Description

Your Rachio sprinkler controller has schedules set but zones are not watering at the programmed times. The app shows the schedule as active but the sprinklers never turn on. Your lawn is drying out because the automated watering is not running. Manual zone testing from the app works fine which confirms the wiring and valves are functional.

Symptoms

  • Scheduled watering times pass with no sprinkler activity
  • App shows schedule active but zones do not run
  • Manual zone test works but schedule does not
  • Weather Intelligence skipped watering for days
  • Standby mode accidentally enabled
  • Schedule shows next run date far in the future

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Weather Intelligence rain skip activated for extended period
  • Controller in Standby mode pausing all schedules
  • Schedule set to specific days that have passed
  • Seasonal Shift reduced watering to zero percent
  • WiFi disconnected so cloud schedule cannot trigger
  • Rain sensor wired to controller reporting wet conditions

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not leave Standby mode on as a seasonal winterization method. Use the Winterize feature in the app instead which properly blows out the lines and protects the system from freezing.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Standby Mode

Open Rachio app and look for Standby Mode banner at top. If enabled it pauses all schedules. Tap to disable. Standby mode is easy to activate accidentally and stops all automated watering while manual control still works. This is the most common cause of schedules not running.

2

Check Weather Intelligence Skips

In app go to schedule then History. Look for Weather Intelligence skip entries. Rachio skips watering when it detects recent rain or forecasted rain. During prolonged rainy periods it may skip for days. If your area is dry but Rachio thinks it rained check your weather station source in Settings and switch to a closer station.

3

Verify Schedule Configuration

Tap your schedule and check the run days. If set to Specific Days Of Week make sure today is checked. If using Interval mode verify the interval is not set too far apart. Check that all desired zones are included in the schedule and none were accidentally removed. Check start time is set correctly with AM or PM.

4

Check Seasonal Shift

In schedule settings check Seasonal Shift percentage. If set to 0 percent the schedule runs but waters for zero minutes. During winter some users lower this to zero and forget to restore it in spring. Set to 100 percent for normal watering or use Rachio recommended percentages.

5

Check Rain Sensor

If you have a physical rain sensor wired to the Rachio check the sensor bypass switch on the controller. Set it to Bypass to test. If sprinklers run in bypass mode your rain sensor is stuck in wet position. Clean or replace the rain sensor. Also check Rain Sensor setting in app under Controller Settings to ensure it is configured correctly.

Quick Solutions

Disable rain skip temporarily to test
Take controller out of Standby mode
Switch schedule to interval or flexible daily
Check Seasonal Shift is not at zero
Verify WiFi connection is active
Check rain sensor bypass switch

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Schedules that skip randomly are usually a daylight-saving holdover — delete and recreate the schedule to clear the corrupted entry.

Pro Tip

Use Flex Daily schedule instead of Fixed schedule. Flex Daily adjusts automatically based on weather soil type and sun exposure so it waters optimally without manual seasonal adjustments.

Real-World Insight

Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
