- Weather Intelligence skip triggered by rain forecast or recent rain
- Controller is in standby or paused mode in the Rachio app
- Schedule disabled or set to wrong days in app configuration
Problem Description
Your Rachio sprinkler controller is not starting its scheduled watering runs at the programmed times. The Rachio app shows the schedule as active and the controller appears online but no watering occurs. Scheduled skips from weather intelligence, a paused controller, or the schedule being inactive in the app are the most common reasons runs do not start as expected.
Symptoms
- Rachio app shows schedule is active but watering does not start
- Controller skips scheduled run without any notification
- App history shows no watering activity at the scheduled time
- Some zones run but others in the same schedule are skipped
- Rachio runs manually when started from app but skips all schedules
- Schedule was working then stopped after a recent app update
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Weather Intelligence skip triggered by rain forecast or recent rain
- Controller is in standby or paused mode in the Rachio app
- Schedule disabled or set to wrong days in app configuration
- Seasonal adjustment reduced run time to zero for affected zones
- WiFi dropped at scheduled run time preventing cloud trigger
- Rachio server outage prevented schedule dispatch at run time
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not disable Weather Intelligence entirely to force all schedules to run. Watering after heavy rain can cause lawn disease, runoff, and wasted water which Weather Intelligence is specifically designed to prevent.
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Weather Intelligence Skip History
Open the Rachio app and tap the controller then go to Schedule History or Activity. Look for any Weather Skip entries at your scheduled run time. Rachio Weather Intelligence automatically skips runs when it detects sufficient recent rainfall or forecasts precipitation within 24 hours. If skips are occurring more than desired go to the schedule settings and reduce the Weather Intelligence sensitivity or switch from Climate Skip to a simpler skip rule that requires confirmed rain at your exact location.
Verify Controller Is Not in Standby
In the Rachio app tap the controller icon at the top of the home screen. If Standby Mode is active a pause icon or Standby label will be shown. Tap it to disable Standby and return the controller to active mode. Standby mode is easily enabled accidentally from the app home screen or during a manual intervention. When in Standby all scheduled runs are silently suppressed without any notification or history entry making it appear the schedule simply is not working.
Confirm Schedule Days and Enable Status
Open the Rachio app and go to Schedules. Tap the affected schedule and verify it is toggled to Enabled. Check the watering days and confirm they include today. Also check the start time and ensure it has not been inadvertently changed to a different time zone. Rachio stores schedule times in UTC internally and some app versions have shown time zone bugs after DST changes. Delete and recreate the schedule if the time appears correct but runs are still being missed.
Check Seasonal Adjustment Settings
Rachio Seasonal Adjustment automatically reduces or increases run times based on evapotranspiration data for your location and season. If the multiplier is set very low for winter or drought restrictions the calculated run time for some zones may be rounded down to zero minutes. In the Rachio app go to Schedule settings and look for Seasonal Adjustment. Check the current multiplier percentage. If it is below 20 percent manually override it or set a minimum run time per zone to prevent total skip.
Test Zones Manually and Check WiFi
In the Rachio app tap Run on each zone individually to verify the valves open and water flows. If manual runs work correctly the hardware is functional and the issue is schedule or cloud connectivity related. Check the controller LED to confirm it shows a solid WiFi connection at the time schedules are expected to run. If the controller loses WiFi between 11 PM and 6 AM it cannot receive schedule triggers from Rachio cloud servers. Improve WiFi signal or add an extender near the controller.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Schedules that skip randomly are usually a daylight-saving holdover — delete and recreate the schedule to clear the corrupted entry.
Enable push notifications for Rachio skip alerts so you know immediately when a scheduled run is skipped by Weather Intelligence and can manually trigger if needed.
Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
