Problem Description

August guest access lets you share entry with family, guests, or service people, with always-on or scheduled permissions. This covers when guest access isn't working — invites not landing, guests unable to unlock, or schedules not applying.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Guest access hinges on the guest completing their side — installing the August app, creating an account, and accepting the invite — and on the right permission level and schedule being set. Most "guest can't get in" reports are an unfinished invite or a schedule/timezone mismatch rather than a lock fault.

Walk the guest through accepting the invite and signing into an August account, then set their access type (recurring, temporary, or always) with the correct days, times, and timezone. Bluetooth-only guests need to be physically at the door; remote unlock requires the lock online via a bridge or built-in WiFi. Always make access changes with the lock connected so grants and revocations sync immediately.

Symptoms

  • Guest access not working
  • Invite not delivered/accepted
  • Guest can't unlock
  • Schedule ignored
  • Guest sees no lock
  • Remote guest access fails
  • Revoked guest still has access
  • Guest app errors

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Invite not accepted / app not installed
  • Guest has no August account
  • Wrong permission level assigned
  • Bluetooth guest expecting remote access
  • No bridge/WiFi for remote guest use
  • Schedule misconfigured (timezone)
  • Lock offline when access changed
  • Sent to the wrong contact

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the guest invitation status

Open the August app, select your lock, and go to Guest Access. Check the status of the guest — Pending means they have not accepted the invitation yet. The guest must download the August app, create an account using the same phone number or email the invite was sent to, and accept the invitation. If the invite has expired, delete and resend it.

2

Verify the guest access schedule

If the guest has accepted but cannot lock or unlock, check their access schedule. Tap the guest name in the August app and review their allowed days and times. If they are trying to use the lock outside their schedule, it will not work. Adjust the schedule or set it to Always Active if they need unrestricted access.

3

Check guest phone requirements

The guest phone must have Bluetooth enabled, location services on (Android requires this for Bluetooth), and the August app installed with the latest version. If the guest has an older phone, Bluetooth Low Energy compatibility may be an issue — the August lock requires BLE 4.0 or higher, which excludes some phones from before 2013.

4

Remote access requires WiFi Bridge

Guests can only operate the lock via Bluetooth when standing at the door. For remote locking/unlocking (from another location), the lock must be connected to the internet via the August WiFi Bridge or the WiFi Smart Lock 4th Gen's built-in WiFi. Guest accounts must also have remote access enabled — check Guest Access settings and make sure Remote Lock/Unlock is toggled on for that guest.

Fix guests seeing the lock as unavailable

If the guest's August app shows the lock as unavailable or offline, they are out of Bluetooth range. The guest must be within 10-15 feet of the lock for Bluetooth to connect. If they are remote and the lock has WiFi, check the WiFi Bridge status — if the bridge is offline, no one can access the lock remotely. Restart the bridge by unplugging it for 10 seconds.

Quick Solutions

Have the guest accept the invite and install the app
Ensure the guest has an August account
Assign the correct permission level
Provide a bridge/WiFi lock for remote guest access
Double-check the schedule and timezone
Make access changes with the lock online
Re-send the invite to the right contact
Confirm revocations synced to the lock

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
