Why Is My August Lock Motor Jammed?

A jammed August lock motor turns but can't move the deadbolt — you hear it straining or grinding, and the bolt doesn't lock or unlock. It's almost always the deadbolt binding or the adapter slipping rather than a failed motor.

Remove the lock and check the deadbolt

Clear debris from the adapter

With the lock removed, check the adapter that connects the motor to the thumb turn. Debris, paint chips, or metal shavings can jam the adapter. Clean it out and make sure it rotates freely. Fix strike plate alignment

The most common cause of motor jams is a misaligned strike plate. When the door shifts slightly (temperature changes, settling house, loose hinges), the deadbolt hits the edge of the strike plate hole instead of sliding in cleanly. The motor stalls because it cannot push the bolt through the obstruction. Loosen the strike plate, adjust its position so the bolt enters the hole centered with clearance on all sides, and retighten. Test by hand before remounting the lock.

Lubricate and recalibrate

After fixing any mechanical issue, apply graphite lubricant to the deadbolt mechanism (available at any hardware store — it comes in a squeeze tube). Do not use oil-based lubricants as they attract dust and gum up the mechanism over time. Remount the lock and run calibration in the August app (Lock Settings > Calibrate Lock).
