- Geofence too small or home address wrong
- Didn't fully leave the geofence
- Location not Always/Precise
Problem Description
Your August smart lock has auto-unlock enabled but it does not unlock when you arrive home. You have to manually unlock with the app or key every time. The whole point of auto-unlock is hands-free entry but it never works reliably. Sometimes it unlocks when you are still blocks away and other times not at all.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
With Auto-Unlock, the single most overlooked requirement is the geofence: August only arms an unlock after your phone has clearly left home and is coming back, so if your home location is wrong or the radius is tiny, short trips never register as "away" and nothing unlocks on return. DoorSense also has to be set up, because Auto-Unlock uses door state.
Check your home address and geofence in the app so leaving is reliably detected, and make sure DoorSense is installed and aligned. Then cover the phone side — Always/Precise location and no battery-saver suspending the app — and confirm Bluetooth reaches the door. When the away/return cycle and DoorSense both work, Auto-Unlock fires as you walk up.
Symptoms
- Auto-unlock enabled but doesn't fire
- No unlock on arrival
- Late unlock
- Manual unlock needed
- Intermittent
- Fails in the background
- Geofence seems ignored
- DoorSense-related failure
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Geofence too small or home address wrong
- Didn't fully leave the geofence
- Location not Always/Precise
- Battery optimization suspending the app
- Bluetooth range weak at the door
- DoorSense not set up or misaligned
- Lock/bridge offline
- WiFi/cellular gaps near home
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Auto-unlock creates a security consideration. Anyone with your phone could unlock your door. Use with awareness of this risk.
Step-by-Step Solution
Fix Location Permissions
Auto-unlock needs constant location access. On iPhone go to Settings then Privacy then Location Services then August and select Always. On Android go to Settings then Apps then August then Permissions then Location and select Allow all the time. Without always-on location auto-unlock cannot detect your arrival.
Adjust Geofence Size
The geofence determines how close you must be before auto-unlock arms. In the August app go to Auto-Unlock settings and adjust the geofence radius. Too small and you may be inside before it arms. Too large and it triggers early. Start with 200-300 meters and adjust based on your experience.
Disable Battery Optimization
Battery optimization kills background apps to save power. This breaks auto-unlock. On Android go to Settings then Battery then Battery Optimization and disable it for August. On iPhone make sure Background App Refresh is enabled for August in Settings.
Verify Bluetooth Connectivity
Auto-unlock uses Bluetooth to communicate with the lock when you approach. Your phone Bluetooth must be on. Walk slowly toward your door to give Bluetooth time to connect. If you rush past the lock before Bluetooth connects it cannot unlock in time.
Check August WiFi Bridge
If you have an August WiFi Connect bridge it helps auto-unlock work more reliably. Verify the bridge shows online in the August app. The bridge can unlock the door via WiFi even if Bluetooth is slow to connect. If you do not have a bridge consider adding one.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.
Auto-unlock works best when you approach your door at a normal walking pace. Running or driving past may not give the system enough time.
Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
