Problem Description

The August Smart Lock Pro adds Z-Wave so it can integrate with smart-home hubs like SmartThings and Ring alongside Bluetooth and the August app. This covers Z-Wave pairing and control problems — the hub not finding the lock, losing it, or missing features.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The Smart Lock Pro's Z-Wave radio lets it live in a broader smart-home hub (SmartThings, Ring Alarm, Hubitat) independent of August's own app — and Z-Wave locks require secure inclusion and a strong routing path to be controllable. So pairing problems are usually a stale previous pairing, weak range, or a non-secure inclusion.

Exclude the lock first to clear any old network membership, then include it securely (S2/S0) from within good Z-Wave range, adding a plug-in repeater near the door if the mesh is thin. Fresh AA batteries and current hub firmware help. If control broke after August's 1.61.0 update, re-include the lock and update the hub, since that firmware disrupted Z-Wave for some Pros.

Symptoms

  • Won't pair to the Z-Wave hub
  • Hub can't control the lock
  • Included but no lock/unlock
  • Loses Z-Wave connection
  • Missing features on the hub
  • Secure pairing fails
  • No status via Z-Wave
  • Inconsistent hub control

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Lock not excluded from a previous network
  • Out of Z-Wave range / weak mesh
  • Non-secure inclusion
  • Hub not in add mode / wrong procedure
  • No repeater near the door
  • Low batteries
  • 1.61.0 firmware Z-Wave regression
  • Hub firmware/driver out of date

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check that your Smart Lock Pro has the Z-Wave module

The August Smart Lock Pro supports Z-Wave through an optional Z-Wave Plus module (August Connect Sense) that attaches to the top of the lock. This module is sold separately and is not included with the lock. If you do not have the Z-Wave module, the Smart Lock Pro communicates only via Bluetooth and WiFi (through the bridge). Check the top of your lock for the Z-Wave module — it is a small attachment that clips on.

2

Put the lock in Z-Wave pairing mode

In the August app, go to Lock Settings > Z-Wave Settings > Add to Z-Wave Network. The lock enters Z-Wave inclusion mode and broadcasts a pairing signal. On your Z-Wave hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Vera, or similar), start the Z-Wave inclusion/pairing process within 30 seconds. The hub should discover the August lock. If it does not, move the hub closer to the lock — Z-Wave has a range of about 30-50 feet indoors.

3

Configure Z-Wave in your hub

After pairing, the lock appears in your Z-Wave hub as a door lock device. You can now lock and unlock it through the hub interface, include it in automations, and monitor its status. The lock reports lock/unlock events, battery level, and DoorSense status via Z-Wave. Set up automations like auto-locking when your security system arms, or unlocking when a specific user code is entered.

Fix pairing failures

If the hub cannot find the lock, make sure the Z-Wave module is properly attached and has power (it draws from the lock batteries). Try excluding the lock from Z-Wave first (Lock Settings > Z-Wave Settings > Remove from Z-Wave Network), then re-include it. Z-Wave devices sometimes retain ghost pairings from previous hubs. A full exclusion clears this. Also check that your hub supports Z-Wave Plus (700 or 800 series) — very old Z-Wave hubs may have compatibility issues.

Known firmware limitations

A mandatory firmware update (version 1.61.0) changed the Z-Wave protocol handling on some Smart Lock Pro units. If Z-Wave stopped working after a firmware update, check the August community forums for patches. Some users needed to unpair and re-pair the Z-Wave connection after the update. If Z-Wave will not pair at all after the firmware update, contact August support — they may need to push a fix to your specific lock.

Quick Solutions

Exclude the lock, then include it fresh
Pair within range or add a repeater near the door
Ensure secure (S2/S0) inclusion for control
Follow the hub's exact inclusion steps
Add a mains-powered Z-Wave repeater
Replace the AA batteries
Update hub firmware; address the 1.61.0 impact
Update the hub driver for the lock

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Lock not excluded from a previous network
  • Out of Z-Wave range / weak mesh
  • Non-secure inclusion
  • Hub not in add mode / wrong procedure
  • No repeater near the door
