- Bridge on weak 2.4GHz WiFi
- Bridge too far from the lock (Bluetooth) or router
- Bridge unplugged / power issue
Problem Description
Your August smart lock WiFi bridge has gone offline and you can no longer control the lock remotely through the August app. The bridge LED may show red or amber instead of solid green and the app shows the lock as offline or unavailable. Without the WiFi bridge working you lose remote lock and unlock ability auto-unlock geofencing notifications and guest access features leaving you with only Bluetooth range control.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The August Connect WiFi bridge is what gives a Bluetooth August lock remote access — it has to sit in a sweet spot: close enough to the lock for a solid Bluetooth link, but also somewhere with strong 2.4GHz WiFi. When it goes offline, remote control and notifications stop, though Bluetooth still works at the door.
Plug the bridge into an outlet roughly midway between your router and the lock so it has both good WiFi and Bluetooth range, and confirm it's on the 2.4GHz band. If your network changed, re-run WiFi setup so it gets the new credentials, and reserve a DHCP IP so the router keeps it. Splitting bands to expose 2.4GHz and updating the bridge firmware resolve most stubborn drops.
Symptoms
- WiFi bridge offline
- Lost remote control
- Lock shows offline
- Bridge LED wrong
- Works by Bluetooth only
- Bridge won't reconnect
- Offline after a router change
- Intermittent bridge connection
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Bridge on weak 2.4GHz WiFi
- Bridge too far from the lock (Bluetooth) or router
- Bridge unplugged / power issue
- Router changed / new password
- Band steering pushing it to 5GHz
- Router blocking the device
- Firmware out of date
- IP/DHCP conflict
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not plug the August bridge into a power strip with a surge protector switch. Accidental switch-offs kill the bridge connection. Use a dedicated wall outlet that stays powered at all times.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Power Cycle the Bridge
Unplug the August WiFi bridge from the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds then plug it back in. Watch the LED indicator. It should blink green while connecting then turn solid green when connected to both WiFi and the lock via Bluetooth. If it stays red or amber after 2 minutes the bridge cannot connect to your WiFi network. Power cycling resolves most temporary connection drops caused by router restarts or brief outages.
Check Bridge Placement
The August bridge needs to be within Bluetooth range of the lock and WiFi range of your router simultaneously. Place it within 5 to 10 feet of the smart lock and verify it has strong WiFi signal at that location. Test WiFi signal with your phone at the outlet location. If the bridge is in a hallway far from both the lock and router it may intermittently lose connection to one or both. A centrally placed outlet between the two is ideal.
Reconnect Bridge to WiFi
Open the August app go to the lock settings then select the WiFi bridge. Choose Set Up WiFi Bridge or Reconnect. The app will search for the bridge via Bluetooth from your phone. Select your 2.4GHz WiFi network and enter the password. The August bridge only supports 2.4GHz WiFi not 5GHz. If your router combines bands into one name you may need to separate them or the bridge could connect to the wrong band.
Verify Router Settings
Log into your router admin panel and confirm the 2.4GHz band is active and broadcasting. Check that MAC address filtering is either disabled or has the August bridge MAC address whitelisted. Also verify the router is set to WPA2 security as some bridges have issues with WPA3. If your internet provider recently replaced or updated your router the WiFi settings may have changed requiring bridge reconfiguration.
Factory Reset Bridge If Needed
If the bridge will not reconnect after power cycling press and hold the small reset button on the bridge for 10 seconds using a paperclip. The LED will flash rapidly indicating a factory reset. Release the button and wait for the bridge to enter pairing mode. Then go through the full setup process in the August app. A factory reset clears any corrupted configuration and starts fresh. You will need to reconfigure remote access and guest codes after reset.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.
The newer August WiFi Smart Lock has the bridge built directly into the lock eliminating the separate bridge device. If your bridge fails frequently consider upgrading to the integrated WiFi lock model.
Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.
