Problem Description

Your Ring smart lock does not unlock when commanded from the Ring app or Alexa. The lock may show as offline, commands may time out, or the app shows success but the lock does not move. The physical keypad may still work while app control fails. This prevents convenient remote access and auto-unlock features.

Symptoms

  • App shows lock offline
  • Unlock command times out
  • App says unlocked but lock did not move
  • Keypad works but app does not
  • Lock slow to respond
  • Alexa cannot control lock

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Lock WiFi connection lost
  • Lock batteries low
  • Router too far from lock
  • Lock firmware outdated
  • Z-Wave connection issue if applicable
  • Ring account authentication expired

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never leave your door secured only by the smart lock if the batteries are critically low. The lock will stop responding leaving you locked out. Replace batteries when the low warning appears.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Battery Level

Low batteries cause connectivity issues before the lock dies completely. In the Ring app tap the lock then Device Health. Check battery level. If below 30% replace the batteries. The Ring Smart Lock uses 4 AA batteries. Use quality alkaline or lithium batteries for best performance.

2

Verify WiFi Connection

In Device Health check WiFi signal strength. The lock needs a decent signal to receive app commands. If signal is weak or offline try rebooting your router. Check that your WiFi name and password have not changed. If they changed you need to reconnect the lock to WiFi in setup.

3

Update Lock Firmware

Check for firmware updates in Device Health. Ring regularly releases updates that improve connectivity and fix bugs. If an update is available install it. Keep the lock on WiFi and avoid using it during the update. Updates typically take 5-15 minutes.

4

Re-add the Lock

If the lock appears offline and reconnection fails remove it from your Ring account and re-add it. In the app go to the lock settings, tap Remove Device. Then tap Add a Device in the Ring app and follow setup prompts to add the lock fresh. You will need to be at the lock to complete setup.

5

Check Physical Operation

If app shows commands succeeding but the lock does not move there may be a mechanical issue. Try locking and unlocking with the physical thumb turn and keypad. If physical operation is difficult the deadbolt may be misaligned with the strike plate. Adjust the strike plate so the bolt extends freely.

Quick Solutions

Check and replace batteries
Verify lock WiFi connection
Move router closer or add extender
Update lock firmware
Re-add lock to Ring app
Check Ring account status

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Ring recommends placing your WiFi router within 30 feet of the lock with minimal walls between. A WiFi extender near the door significantly improves reliability.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
