- Wrong, deleted, or expired access code
- Keypad lockout after repeated wrong entries
- Low batteries
Problem Description
Your Schlage Encode keypad flashes red when you enter your code and the door does not unlock. You know the code is correct but the lock rejects it. The red flash indicates the code is wrong or the lock is in lockout mode. After too many incorrect attempts the lock enters a temporary lockout where no codes work for a period of time.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A red flash on a Schlage keypad means the code was rejected — either it's wrong, deleted, expired, or outside its schedule, or the keypad has locked out after several bad attempts and is ignoring entries for a cooldown. Three red flashes with beeps is the classic lockout signal, not a broken lock.
Enter a code you know is active, and if the keypad is in lockout, wait the cooldown out before trying again. Check the code's validity and schedule in the Schlage Home app, since a synced-out or time-limited code reads as "wrong." Low batteries and a binding deadbolt can also make a valid code fail to open the door, so fresh batteries and good deadbolt alignment matter here too.
Symptoms
- Keypad flashes red on code entry
- Code rejected, door won't unlock
- Three red flashes/beeps
- Keypad temporarily dead after tries
- Red X on the touchscreen
- Correct code still refused
- Locked out after wrong attempts
- Intermittent red rejections
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Wrong, deleted, or expired access code
- Keypad lockout after repeated wrong entries
- Low batteries
- Deadbolt binding so it won't retract
- Wrong entry sequence for the model
- Touchscreen dirty or misreading presses
- Code outside its scheduled time window
- Firmware/app sync issue with codes
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
A factory reset deletes ALL user codes. Anyone who had a code will be locked out until you manually re-add their codes. Notify all code holders before resetting.

Step-by-Step Solution
Wait for Lockout
If someone entered wrong codes multiple times the lock enters a security lockout. Schlage Encode locks out for 60 seconds after 3 consecutive wrong codes. Wait a full 60 seconds without pressing any buttons. Then carefully enter your code. If it still fails the code may have been deleted.
Try Programming Code
Enter your 6-digit programming code followed by the Schlage button then 0 then Schlage button again. If the lock beeps and flashes green the programming code works and the lock is functional. The issue is with your user code not the lock itself. Re-add your user code through the programming menu.
Replace Batteries
Even if the keypad lights up the batteries may be too weak to drive the motor. Replace all 4 AA batteries with fresh Energizer or Duracell alkaline. Do not use rechargeable batteries. Low voltage causes the lock to reject codes even when correct because it cannot power the motor to unlock.

$6.96Re-Add User Code
Using the programming code enter programming mode. Press Schlage button then programming code then Schlage button then 1 for add code then a slot number 1-8 then your desired 4-digit user code then Schlage button. The lock beeps confirming the code is added. Test the new code.
Factory Reset If Needed
If you lost the programming code the only option is a factory reset. Remove the battery cover. Disconnect then reconnect the battery cable. Within 10 seconds press and hold the Schlage button until it beeps. This resets all codes. You will need to set a new programming code and all user codes from scratch.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.
Write down your programming code and store it somewhere safe like a phone note or home safe. The programming code is the master key to your lock. Without it you must factory reset.
Three-beep rejections are usually a lockout nobody noticed — five wrong attempts locks the keypad silently and most users don't know the timer exists.
- Wrong, deleted, or expired access code
- Keypad lockout after repeated wrong entries
- Low batteries
- Deadbolt binding so it won't retract
- Wrong entry sequence for the model
