- No Thread border router present or online
- Firmware not updated to a Matter-capable version
- Wrong or unreadable Matter setup code
Problem Description
Your Schlage Encode Plus smart lock cannot complete Matter commissioning to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or another Matter controller. The Encode Plus supports both WiFi and Matter over WiFi — it does not use Thread. Commissioning failures are usually caused by incomplete Schlage Home app setup, missing firmware updates, or WiFi network settings that block Matter local network communication between the lock and the controller hub.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The Encode Plus supports Matter through a firmware update, and it joins over Thread — so Matter commissioning needs two things present: the updated firmware and a working Thread border router (a HomePod, Apple TV 4K, or compatible hub). Without a border router online, commissioning stalls or the lock drops right after pairing.
Confirm the lock is on Matter-capable firmware and that your ecosystem has a Thread border router online, then scan the Matter setup code and stay near the lock for the Bluetooth handoff. To use it in a second platform, use Matter multi-admin sharing rather than re-pairing, since the lock has a limited number of fabric slots. A factory reset and clean re-commission fixes a lock stuck partway.
Symptoms
- Matter commissioning fails
- QR/setup code rejected
- Won't join the Matter network
- Stuck adding to a Matter app
- Pairs then unresponsive
- Can't add to a second ecosystem
- No Thread during commissioning
- Times out at pairing
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- No Thread border router present or online
- Firmware not updated to a Matter-capable version
- Wrong or unreadable Matter setup code
- Matter controller/hub offline
- Lock already at its pairing/fabric limit
- Weak Bluetooth during commissioning
- Thread network congested or interference
- Ecosystem/app bug during commissioning
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Factory resetting the Schlage Encode Plus deletes all stored access codes. Write down all current codes before performing a factory reset.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check if your Encode Plus supports Matter
Only the Schlage Encode Plus (model BE499WB) supports Matter — the original Encode (BE489WB) does not. Check the model number on the lock interior or in the Schlage Home app. If you have the original Encode, Matter pairing is not possible. The Encode Plus shipped with Matter support via a firmware update in 2023. Check the firmware version in the Schlage Home app — you may need to update before Matter features appear.
Update the lock firmware before attempting Matter pairing
Matter support requires firmware version 3.0 or later on the Encode Plus. Open the Schlage Home app, connect to the lock via Bluetooth, and check Settings > Firmware. If an update is available, install it — the update takes 10-15 minutes over Bluetooth, so keep your phone within 3 feet of the lock and do not close the app. After the update completes, the lock reboots. Reopen the app and verify the firmware version. The Matter pairing option should now appear in the lock settings.
Generate the Matter pairing code
In the Schlage Home app, go to the lock settings and look for Smart Home Integration or Matter Setup. Tap it to generate a Matter setup code (an 11-digit numeric code or QR code). This code is unique to your lock and is used by Apple Home, Google Home, or other Matter controllers to pair the lock. Have the code ready before opening your smart home app. The code is valid for a limited time — if pairing takes too long, you may need to regenerate it.
Pair through Apple Home, Google Home, or other Matter controller
Open your Matter controller app (Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, or Amazon Alexa). Tap Add Device or Add Accessory and select Matter. Scan the QR code or enter the numeric pairing code from the Schlage app. The controller discovers the lock over your local network (WiFi and Thread). The Encode Plus uses WiFi for Matter — it does not use Thread. Keep the lock powered on and within WiFi range during pairing. If pairing fails with a timeout, make sure the lock and your phone or hub are on the same WiFi network.
Fix Matter pairing failures
If Matter pairing keeps failing, check these known problems. First, your WiFi: the Encode Plus only supports 2.4GHz WiFi. If your Matter controller (Apple TV, Google Nest Hub) is on 5GHz and the lock is on 2.4GHz, they may not discover each other depending on router settings. Second, multicast: Matter uses mDNS for discovery, which requires multicast traffic to be enabled on your router. Disable AP isolation and make sure multicast/IGMP snooping is not blocking traffic. Third, try resetting the Matter credentials on the lock: in the Schlage Home app, go to Matter settings and tap Reset Matter. Then regenerate the code and retry pairing.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.
The Schlage Encode Plus supports multi-admin. After commissioning to one platform, use that platform's Share or multi-admin option to add it to a second controller without re-commissioning.
Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.
