Overview
This guide explains how to connect your Schlage Encode or Encode Plus smart lock to the Schlage Home app. It covers the initial Bluetooth pairing, connecting the lock to your home's 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and setting up user codes and other smart features.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The most common connection failure is users trying to connect a Schlage Connect or Sense to the Schlage Home app — those models need a Z-Wave or Zigbee hub instead. For Encode models, the 2.4GHz WiFi issue is the top problem, followed by trying to pair from too far away. Users with metal doors or deadbolt reinforcement plates often have weak WiFi at the lock — a nearby WiFi extender solves it. Low batteries cause more disconnections than any other single factor.
What's Included
- An installed Schlage Encode or Encode Plus
- Smartphone with the Schlage Home app
- Your home's 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network password
- Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone
- You are standing close to the lock
- The lock has fresh AA batteries installed
Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- The lock is not in Bluetooth pairing mode
- Your smartphone's Bluetooth is turned off
- The Wi-Fi password was entered incorrectly
- The lock is too far from the Wi-Fi router
- You are trying to connect to a 5GHz network
- The batteries in the lock are low
Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
Do not factory reset the lock unless you have exhausted all other options. A factory reset erases all user codes, schedules, and settings. If you must reset, press the Schlage button, enter the programming code, then press 0, wait for three beeps, press 0 again. Write down your programming code before resetting — you will need it to set up again.
Tools & Requirements
Installation Steps
Check which Schlage lock model you have
Schlage Encode uses WiFi and connects directly to the Schlage Home app — no hub needed. Schlage Encode Plus adds Apple Home Key support. Schlage Connect and Sense use Z-Wave or Zigbee and require a smart home hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, etc.) — they do NOT connect to the Schlage app directly. Check the model on the back of the lock interior. If you have a Connect or Sense, you need a hub, not the Schlage Home app.
Download the correct app and create an account
For Schlage Encode and Encode Plus, download the Schlage Home app (not the older Schlage Sense app). Create an account or sign in. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and location permissions are granted for the app — both are required for the initial pairing, even on WiFi models.
Put the lock in pairing mode
On the Schlage Encode: press the Schlage button on the front of the lock, then enter your programming code (default is on the sticker inside the battery cover), then press 0. The lock should beep and the Schlage button will flash blue, indicating it is in pairing mode. If you do not have the programming code, you will need to factory reset the lock first.
Stand within 3 feet of the lock during Bluetooth pairing
In the Schlage Home app, tap Add Lock and follow the prompts. Hold your phone within 3 feet of the lock — initial pairing uses Bluetooth, not WiFi. If the app cannot find the lock, make sure no other phone is already paired to it (only one owner phone at a time). Force-close the app and retry if it gets stuck on the scanning screen.
Connect the lock to your WiFi network
After Bluetooth pairing, the app will prompt you to connect the lock to WiFi. Select your 2.4GHz network — Schlage locks do not support 5GHz. Enter your WiFi password carefully. If your router uses a combined 2.4/5GHz network with the same name, the lock may fail to connect. Temporarily create a separate 2.4GHz SSID or disable the 5GHz band during setup.
Update the lock firmware after connecting
Once connected, check for firmware updates in the app under Lock Settings > Firmware. Schlage regularly releases updates that fix Bluetooth disconnection bugs and improve WiFi reliability. The update takes 5-10 minutes — keep your phone near the lock and do not close the app during the update. The lock will beep when the update is complete.
Fix if the lock keeps disconnecting
If the lock pairs but then goes offline in the app, check WiFi signal at the lock location — thick doors and metal frames block WiFi. If signal is weak, add a WiFi extender nearby. Also check the batteries — Schlage Encode uses 4 AA batteries and low batteries cause intermittent WiFi drops. Replace with fresh Energizer or Duracell alkaline batteries, not rechargeable ones (the voltage is too low).
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If you changed your WiFi password or router, you need to reconnect the lock to WiFi through the app. The lock remembers the old credentials and will show as offline. Go to Lock Settings > WiFi in the Schlage Home app to update. Also, the Schlage Encode only supports one owner phone — if someone else paired it first, they need to remove the lock from their account before you can add it to yours.
