- Blower or air pressure switch fault
- Low water flow (E09 pressure switch)
- Failed hot surface igniter (E01)
Problem Description
The Jandy JXi gas pool heater displays error codes on the touchscreen, fails to ignite, or shuts down during operation. The JXi uses a premix combustion system with a hot surface igniter and flame sensing rod. Error codes on the JXi touchscreen pinpoint the exact failure — from ignition lockout to sensor faults to gas pressure issues.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The JXi shows a specific error code, and each maps to a real cause: E09 to water flow and the pressure switch, E01 to the igniter, and E04 to flame loss at the sensing rod. In real installs a dirty filter cutting flow (E09) and a dirty flame rod (E04) are the common ones.
Read the code first and fix the matching part before assuming a control-board fault.
Symptoms
- JXi will not fire
- Touchscreen shows an error code (E01/E04/E09)
- Ignition lockout
- Fires then drops out
- No heat with the pump running
- Blower runs but no flame
- Intermittent flame loss
- Repeated lockouts
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Blower or air pressure switch fault
- Low water flow (E09 pressure switch)
- Failed hot surface igniter (E01)
- Dirty flame sensing rod (E04 flame loss)
- Gas supply or pressure fault
- Closed gas valve
- Dirty filter reducing flow
- Venting or airflow problem
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Step-by-Step Solution
Read the error code on the JXi touchscreen
The JXi has a color touchscreen on the front panel that displays specific error codes. Common codes: E01 (ignition lockout — 3 failed ignition attempts), E04 (flame lost during operation), E05 (stack temperature sensor fault), E06 (high limit tripped), E09 (pressure switch open — low water flow), E13 (gas pressure switch fault). Tap the error on the screen for a brief description. Write down the code before resetting — the code identifies which component to troubleshoot. To clear the error, tap Reset on the touchscreen.
Check water flow for pressure switch errors (E09)
E09 means the water pressure switch does not detect adequate flow through the heater. The pump must be running at sufficient speed — on variable speed pumps, the heater requires at least 30 GPM (typically 2400+ RPM on most VS pumps). Check the filter pressure — a dirty filter reduces flow through the heater. Also check that all valves between the pump and heater are fully open and the heater bypass valve is not diverting too much water around the heater. The pressure switch is on the water header inside the heater — test with a multimeter for continuity when the pump runs.
Inspect the hot surface igniter for E01 lockout
E01 ignition lockout means the JXi attempted to light three times and failed. Turn off the heater and gas supply. Remove the front panel (four screws). The hot surface igniter (HSI) is visible inside the premix burner assembly — a thin ceramic rod that glows orange to ignite the gas. If the HSI is cracked, snapped, or does not glow when power is applied, it needs replacement. The JXi HSI part number is R0590500. Handle the new igniter by the ceramic base only — fingerprints on the element cause premature failure.
Clean the flame sensing rod for E04 flame loss
E04 means the heater ignited but the flame sensing rod did not detect the flame, causing the control board to shut off gas. The flame sensing rod is a small metal rod positioned in the burner flame path. Carbon buildup on the rod insulates it from the flame. Remove the rod (one screw, one wire connector on the back of the control panel) and clean it with fine steel wool or 400-grit sandpaper until the metal is shiny. Reinstall and test. If E04 persists after cleaning, the rod may be cracked — replace it (part number R0457600).
Verify gas supply and pressure
The JXi requires 3.5 inches water column (IWC) for natural gas or 10 IWC for propane at the heater inlet. Low gas pressure prevents reliable ignition or causes flame rollout. Check that the manual gas shutoff is open, propane tanks have fuel, and no other gas appliances are running simultaneously (which can drop pressure below minimum). The JXi has a gas pressure switch inside — if gas pressure is too low, the switch opens and prevents ignition (E13 code). Gas pressure testing requires a manometer and should be done by a licensed technician.
Check the blower motor and air pressure switch
The JXi premix system uses a blower to mix air and gas before combustion. If the blower motor fails or runs slowly, the air pressure switch will not close and ignition is blocked. Listen for the blower running when the heater calls for heat — you should hear a fan spin up for about 30 seconds before ignition. If the blower does not start, check the blower motor connector on the control board. If the blower runs but the air pressure switch does not close, check the condensate drain hose connected to the blower housing — if blocked, condensation floods the blower and prevents proper airflow.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.
The Jandy JXi installation and operation manual is at https://www.jandy.com/en/support/manuals — search for JXi. The JXi service manual includes the full error code table, wiring diagram, and component part numbers. The premix burner system in the JXi is sealed — do not attempt to adjust the gas/air mixture. If the heater fires but the flame is yellow instead of blue, the premix ratio is off and requires factory service. The hot surface igniter and flame sensing rod are the most common replaceable parts — keep spares on hand.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Blower or air pressure switch fault
- Low water flow (E09 pressure switch)
- Failed hot surface igniter (E01)
- Dirty flame sensing rod (E04 flame loss)
- Gas supply or pressure fault
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
