- WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
- Device firmware or app needs updating
- Device not properly set up during initial pairing
Problem Description
Your YoLink water leak sensor is not sending alerts when water is detected. The sensor detects water through two gold-plated contacts on the bottom that must be in contact with a flat surface. If the contacts are dirty, raised off the floor, or the sensor is offline, alerts won't trigger. This guide covers checking pairing status, cleaning contacts, and testing.
Symptoms
- Device shows as offline in the app
- Device does not respond to commands
- App cannot connect to device
- Features not working as expected
- Device disconnects frequently
- Automations fail to trigger
- Voice commands not recognized
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
- Device firmware or app needs updating
- Device not properly set up during initial pairing
- Power supply issue or loose connection
- Account not linked correctly
- Too many devices causing network congestion
- Interference from other wireless devices
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not rely solely on smart sensors for life-safety alerts like smoke or carbon monoxide detection. Always maintain dedicated code-compliant smoke and CO detectors. Smart water leak sensors can alert you but cannot stop a leak so know where your water shut-off valve is located.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check the sensor is paired and online
In the YoLink app, check the water sensor status under Devices. It should show as Online. If it shows Offline: the sensor lost connection to the YoLink hub. Check the battery (CR2032 or AAA depending on model). Move the sensor closer to the hub if signal is weak. The sensor communicates via LoRa — range is excellent but not infinite through thick walls and floors.
Check the sensor probe placement
The YoLink water sensor has two metal contact probes on the bottom. These probes must sit flat on the floor surface where water would pool. If the sensor is elevated, on a rug, or probes are not touching the floor, it cannot detect water. Place it directly on hard floor (tile, concrete, hardwood) next to the potential leak source. Water must bridge both probes simultaneously to trigger the alert.
Test the sensor
Place a wet sponge or damp cloth across both metal probes. The sensor should trigger an alert in the YoLink app within 10-30 seconds. If no alert: check the battery. If the battery is fine and the sensor is online but does not alert on water contact, the probes may be corroded or dirty. Clean the metal contacts with a dry cloth or fine sandpaper to restore conductivity.
Check notification settings
If the sensor triggers in the app (you can see the event in the timeline) but you do not receive a push notification: check your phone notification settings. On iPhone: Settings > Notifications > YoLink > Allow Notifications. On Android: Settings > Apps > YoLink > Notifications > enable all channels. Also check that Do Not Disturb is not silencing YoLink alerts. Water leak alerts should be set to break through Do Not Disturb if possible.
Add an automation for siren or valve shut-off
A push notification alone may not wake you at night. In the YoLink app, create automations: If [Water Sensor] detects water → Then [YoLink Siren] sounds (or [Valve Controller] closes). This provides an audible alarm and/or automatic water shut-off. The automation runs through the YoLink hub — it works even if your phone is off or you miss the notification. Test the full automation chain monthly.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Notification delays almost always return after a major iOS or Android update — background app refresh gets reset to restricted on every major OS version.
Pair motion sensors with smart lights to create automatic lighting that turns on when you enter a room and off after a few minutes of no motion. This is one of the simplest and most useful smart home automations you can set up.
Notification delays over 2 minutes are almost never the device's fault — background app restrictions quietly re-enable themselves after every OS update.
